This season to which I am referring is CHRISTMAS, the season in which happiness and kindness are re -born along with the Christ child. Although smiling to an anonymous passer-by may seem trivial, it sparks a flame of warmth and satisfaction which in turn, makes us feel great all over. It is unfortunate that we only find it to be part of the Christmas spirit. Oh! do not get me wrong, there are genuinely nice, kind and friendly people but they appear to be few and far between. Christmas is a season for giving and receiving. This is not just materialistic gifts but gifts of love and friendliness. It is said, it is the thought that counts. This holds true for the fleeting smile or wave. The person who administers these gestures has to be thinking pleasant thoughts, therefore proving the above statement. Although Christmas has been greatly com- mercialized, I really feel people are still aware of the true meaning of this season, which is thanksgiving for everything we usually take for granted. Pt seems that our daily troubles are forgotten for a few moments while we reflect on the love that en- velopes our existence. I think it is absolutely fantastic that for .a few short days, everyone rejoices and unites for a common cause HAPPINESS! —Karen Doherty "Silent Night, Holy Night." The Christmas season is a time to remember the birth of Jesus: however, it now seems as though the commercialism of the season has over- powered its real meaning., Artificial trees, plastic Santas, coloured lights. ar- tificial snow, the list goes on, Is Christmas only Santa Claus and presents or is it the Holy birth and what the giving of presents sym- bolizes? Christmas is a time for children, and Santa plays an important role for them. Those of us who are old enough to understand the season's true meaning sometimes get so lost in holiday preparations, buying gifts and attending . parties that we forget the reason behind our celebrations, Christmas, to some people, is a time in which they' try to decorate their homes more elaborately than anyone else. Others see it as a hectic and bothersome time because they have left their shopping or baking until the last minute. Perhaps we should stop nUr rushing around and partying long enough to reflect upon the true meaning of Christ- mas. Christmas would still be Christmas without all of the decorations and presents, because Christmas is a feeling rather than something you can touch. It is not a tree or coloured lights, it's the gathering together of families. the singing of carols, a smile you received from a stranger who you passed on the street. Christmas is the giving of gifts because God gave us the gift of his son Jesus and because the three wise .men brought Jesus the gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh,. It is nice to have a Christmas tree, lights and parties, somehow Chtjstmas would not seem complete... without them. However, we should stop and think about the true meaning. of the season and not let ourselves get caught up in the com- mercialism ' present at this time of year. — Lynn Moffett The whole concept of Christmas seems to he greatly distorted. these- days. Christmas, automatically brings 'tri mind frantic, last- minute shoppers, hustling about trying to find an ap- propriate gift if has become a time for merchants to decorate- their windows in the traditional red,. white and green. to lure the prospective customers into their store. It is a time for child -ren, who say they have been extra good, anxiously awaiting the arrival of old St. Nick.. The traditional Christmas, with friends and family sit- ting around the Christmas tree singing carols .and sip- ping hot chocolate or hot rider, seems to have disap- peared.. Nowadays, Christmas to children brings the thought of hundreds of gaily wrapped presents overflowing from under the Christmas tree. To adults, Christmas hrings many pains and frustrations, like trying to keep the kids from finding their presents, and the headaches after many hours of • shopping in crowded stores. The majority of children could not appreciate a few simple gifts, and as for singing Christmas carols with their family forget it! Children alone cannot be blamed for this lack of family feeling during the Christmas season. Parents and the media play the greater role. Parents bestow thousands of dollars worth of gifts upon their children, and thus family- feeling amilyfeeling is lost. It becomes necessary for them to buy their child's love at Christ- mas. The media can also he blamed for misleading children. Thousands of the newest toys are advertised daily, without saying anything as to the price of the article. They may feel. unloved if their parents don't buy it for them. Excessive com- mercialization has certainly would he nice to return to a given us a different outlook traditional Christmas and towards Christmas, . give the adults a break from Christmas :brings many the hectic schedule theylrun headaches • and money .hy during this season. worries to adults and is an — Jane Graham anxious time for children.
