A dress rehearsal was held at Auburn Knox United Church
last Sunday afternoon. The Young People and choir of that
church will present the Christmas story in living pictures
with Tight and music on Sunday evening at 8 p.m. in the
church. This same pageant has been performed in the Holy
Trinity Church In Toronto for the past 40 years and those in
the Auburn pageant went to see it a few weeks ago. Here,
left to right are Nancy Verbeek (shepherd), Patty
McDowell (shepherd), Andrew Koopman (Joseph), Faye
Hildebrand (angel), Marilyn Wightman (Mary), Carol
Seers (angel), and Sharon Glousher (angel). Ann St. Jean is
director, Florence Wightman is organist and choir director
and Elliott Lapp is narrator. (staff photo)

would give you gifts that your

older you get, the more your
views change. Now you see

parents and your relatives to

1 am proud to say that I
have experienced all of these
things and more. My
memories of Christmas are
any and happy.

The festive season proves
to be a bother to adults as
they struggle through
crowded department stores
and exit with an empty
wallet. Those of us who live in
a smaller community must
either wade through slush
and snow ending up with a
cold, or drive in hazardous
weather to the city only to
find crowds of people pushing
to get at the `bargains".
These ' so-called "bargains"
are probably items left over
from a previous year. You
are lucky to get out of a
department store alive at this
time of the year.
However, staff parties
seem to relieve the tension as
a, bottle of "booze" brightens
up the evening. The next
morning a pounding head
awaits their arising. Alcohol
has completely taken over the
festive season. Christmas
parties are socially oriented.
Getting drunk and having a
good time are their main
concern. The theme of
Christmas is swept aside as a
great amount of "spirits" is
consumed. Statistics have
proven the increased number
of deaths during the season
due to the numerous impaired
drivers.
Children, on the other hand,
have no worries at Christmas
except to behave themselves.
They are constantly
threatened by, "You he a
good boy -girl or Santa won't
bring you any presents." This
snow like? and what is a fir
tree?
Then the crucial question:
what is Christmas? For
surely it must be more than
decorations and traditions!
The spirit of Christmas can
be conveyed to the children of
China, and every country in
the world. For them, it
becomes a time of rejoicing, a
time to express love and
kindness. Joy and love—they
arc the essence of Christmas
— the only essential part of
Christmas.
It is for this reason that
Christmas is able to break the
bounds of time, geography,
race and language, to find a
meaningful place in the
hearts of all people.

seems to ,work in most cases
as the child can't bear the
thought of receiving no gifts
from Santa Claus.
Some children are brought
up having no knowledge of the
true meaning of Christmas.
They associate the season
with receiving lots of gifts.
Parents make no attempt to
acquaint them with the birth
of Jesus Christ. I don't mean
to say all parents are
neglecting to teach their
children, Some parents are
still guiding their families
into the learning of Christmas
spirit.
Unfortunately, the
traditional family is disap-
pearing. To all future
parents: I hope you will make
an attempt at establishing a
solid -_family and teach your
children about Christmas.
Let's do away with com-
mercialization!

I am sick, sick, sick of
Christmas. I don't like being
a scrooge or anything but I've
had chestnuts and reindeer
shoved down my throat so
much I've begun to sprout
horns with leaves. As far as
I'm concerned Rudolph can
stick a sprig of mistletoe up
his shiny red nose.
It's not so much your basic
Christmas that sets my Santa
cap to steaming. I really
enjoy giving gifts and getting
them makes me even hap-
pier: Plain Christmas means
a lot to me. Relatives, turkey
dinner and church set my
little heart to heating with all
the joy of any other prac-
titioner of the rite.
The problem is that
Christmas is so loud. Picture
this if you please.
You're driving around and
enjoying yourself until it
suddenly seems that all you
see is Christmas, Christmas,
Christmas. Santa, not Jesus
who started the whole thing,
beams from every window.
"Silver Bells", a nice song
until it was played to death;
streams from every orifice
and Christmas spirits (not the
kind sold at The Duke of
Bedford) flow in an almost
tangible red and green
celluloid tide.
Once more, we are assailed
