The re-enactment of the birth was part of a production of a senior class at St. Mary's school. (staff photo) When God said "YES"! By The Rev. Marvin.L. Barz Berea -by -the -Water Lutheran Church It often seems that Christmas is the season of "don't" - don't peek." "don't touch", "don't tell." In fact it's also easy to get the impression that religion is mostly a matter of "don't- - "don't do this, don't do that". Even one of the old popular Christmas songs starts with Better not. ". Sometimes people get to feeling that Christmas is only for good boys and girls, or for good moms and dads. And we don't .always fit that category, do we? It's really no wonder then, that when the angels came to the shepherds, they hegan hy. saying 'I have GOOD NEWS for you'-. To he sure there are things about which God says "don't-. Ho says "don't fail to love God, don't fail to love other people But that's NOT what Christmas is about! Christmas celebrates the day when God said YES to everyone who will listen. God is still saying: "YES, 1 am willing to accept you, forgive you: YES I am for you: YES I a:n N(th you . God's angel told .Joseph that the promise win coming true in Mary: she will "give birth to a son, and He will he called Emmanuel (which means `God is with us')." Matthew 1: 23 (TEV) What°a miracle and mystery! A baby is horn in Bethlehem, and God is with us, God says "YES". An innocent man dies on a cross, and God is with us, God says "YES". A grave is found empty and its former occupant eats with His followers, and God is with us, God says "YES". When the doctor comes with those icy words, "there is a malignancy" God'.s "YES, f am with you" has real meaning. When your father is struggling for his last breath, or your little child's temperature reaches 105 degrees, then those words "YES, I am with you" have real meaning. When the struggles and burdens of life are getting you down. when job uncertainty, financial insecurity, family disagreements. sickness come along, God's "YES, I am with you" is important. When you sit all alone, and the thoughts of all those mistakes, all those times you've failed, all your faults and weaknesses passthrough your mind, then most of all those words "YES. I am still with you can bring the peace and ,joy that Christmas is all about. Ono YES that really stands out is when God says "YES, I have kept My promises' . No one else does all the time. Yet God does! He sent an angel who said to Mary: "God keeps His promises. you're gainrto have a baby, the Savior, the Son of God." The shepherds heard from a whole multitude of angels: "God has kept His promise in Bethlehem tonight, to you is horn a Savior, Christ the Lord!" Yes, God kept His promise, for you and for me - the Savior, God's YES has come! This is the Good News that Christmas brings. God says YES, inner peace, and Goderich obituary eternal security have come. Jesus kept the Father's promise. Jesus lived a perfect life for us, and the Father says "YES" to us who are imperfect. Jesus suffered the consequences of the guilt of all people, and the Father says "YES, you can live with Me forever". Jesus entered heaven and opened the door for all who will trust Him, and the Father says "YES, you can share My Glory," That's Christmas, the day God said "YES". That's God's message to you - not "no", not "maybe", not "if". God says "YES" to you in Jesus Christ.
