WILD PINE
Messiah ,evAA-v:
had some ragged edges
BY JOSEPH B. HERDMAN
The performance of
Handel's "Messiah" in North
Street United Church last
Saturday evening was
marked by some fine choral
singing from the Four
Counties Choir as well as
some singing that was ob-
viously below their hest,
some very ragged and un-
balanced playing from the
orchestra, and what seemed
to by a lamentable lack of
clear direction from con-
ductor Brian Jackson.
The Four Counties Choir is
a fine choral group, and they Marjorie Sparks has a

what could have been, and
otherwise would have been, a
first-rate performance. The
choir did reach what we --
might assume to be
something like their real
potential in several of the
choruses, notably "All •.ve like
sheep have gone astray",
which was a ray from
beginning to end, and
"Behold the Lamb of God",
where well shaped phrases
and scrupulous attention to
detail brought to life the
poignant beauty of this
chorus.

valley shall be exalted" made
a happy opening to the per-
formance. He has a fine tenor
voice, good breath control, a
sense of dramatic urgency,
and, to all appearances,
complete self-confidence. His
subsequent singing of "Thou
shalt break them" fell short
of the standard set by his
opening solos, but it was still
a moving performance.
Alvin Reimer had perhaps
the heaviest task of the four
soloists, and he proved to be a
true Oratorio singer.
Although his voice sounded a
little rough and out of con-
dition, he brought a sense of
authority and dramatic in-
sight to everything that he
did.
"Why do the nations?" was
vital and exciting, and this
time the orchestra was right
with him with the sort of
accompaniment that this solo
all too rarely gets. Mr,
Reimer brought the right
sense of awe to the recitative
"Behold, I tell you a
mystery", so it is sad to have.
to report that in the suc-
ceeding Aria, "The trumpet
shall sound", the trumpet,
superbly played by an un-
named member of the or-
chestra, did just that, and the
rest of the orchestra went
along with him in gleeful
competition.
Mr. Reimer fought ..well,
and for a time could be faintly
heard as a sort of vocal ob-
bligato to the frolics of the
trumpet and the orchestra,
but he was finally submerged
a pity, because we'could see
that Mr•.AReimer was still
singing, and these were his
final notes to us for the
evening. We would like to
have heard them:
There was a certain
amount of coloratura em-
bellishment. by the soloists,
and this., is in completee accord
with performance practices
of Handel's time. The
practice seems to have died
out in the early 19th century,
and has only recently been
revived. In present-day
performances it is all too
often overdone, or done
crudely and inartistically. On
