C ►� �w r C .yc rC+ s ► Blues quick goals dump Oldtimers The Goderich Oldtimers were edged by the London Blues 6-5 in Oldtimer hockey action Sunday night in A winning combination. Adding to a list of achievements at GDCI the cheerleaders captured the Huron -Perth championship, defeating four other schools in the competition. The members of the winning teamare Joanne Hillier, Beth Morris, Claudette Richard, Eleanor McMillan, Lori Jewell, and Shelley Hill. Standing are'Lorl Hassall and Gail Pinkney. Elizabeth McMillan, also a member of the cheerleaders, was absent for the com- petition. (staff photo) G.D.C.I. cheerleaders best The GDCI cheerleaders went to a • football, cheerleading competition on Thursday, December 15. It was held at South Huron Secondary High School: All cheerleading teams of the Huron .Perth conference were invited and five competed. They were Goderich, South Huron, Stratford Central, Mitchell aryl Wingham. Goderich placed first, South Huron second, and Stratford Central third. On December 19, a recognition assembly was held at GDCI so the cheerleaders could perform their winning routine. to the students and teachers. The cheerleaders for this year are, Claudette Richard (captain), Joanne Hillier (captain), Eleanor McMillan, Shelley Hill, Lori Jewell, Beth Morris, Gail Pinkney, Lori Hassal, and Elizabeth McMillan. Their staff advisor for this year is Mrs. Warr, a teacher at GDCI, who helped the cheerleaders to their victory. Midgets split exhibition series By TD The GDCI midget boys basketball team split a pair of exhibition games in Owen Sound Friday, losing 53-41 to Westhill and defeating Owen Sound Collegiate- Locational Institute, 38.34. Rob McDonald had 14 points for the 'Vikings. aga inst Westhill Mike Murphy had eight and Jim Fritzley had seven points, for Goderich.. Larry Schoenhals led Westhill to victory' with 28 points. The Vikings had trouble with Westhill's fast break and also turned the ball over many times on travelling iolations. These problems, along with committing too many fouls, put the Vikings in hot water, according to their coach, Myles Murdock. Against OSCVI, the Vikings showed a much more organized offence and had more luck containing the opposition's fast brtaeak. The Vikings led 16-13 at half-time. Andy Masse with 14 points and Rob McDonald, with 11, were the Vikings leading scorers. Isaac wins gold for G team The Goderich wrestling :team competed in the Red and Black tournament in Exeter last Friday. Nine teams competed for the team championship. A strong team from Sarnia won the tour- nament. The Godei-ir_h team finished fifth Dwight Tsaae was out- standing for Goc'erich, penning six straight op- ponents to win the 134 pound gold medal. Brian Shewfelt and Rick Carman earned third place medals in the 104 pound class and the 141 pound class respectively. Rick Todd. Bill Tigert, Bob Tigert, Bill Shewfelt, Ray Stanton, Mark Carman, Brian Ried, Randy Graham and Mark Rowe all managed to win at least one match. Chris Wood, Mark Blaney and Graham Suchard also Bantams split A healthy Lakeport Steeler team dumped league leading Kincardine 4-3 Friday night in Bantam BB action in Goderich and an injury riddled team went ,to Walkerton Saturday and got dumped 2-0. The Steelers opened up a 3-1 first period lead in Friday's game and almost blew the win allowing Kincardine to come back and tie it. A goal by Steve Sager with three minutes left in the game. his third of the night, stood as the winner just 36 seconds after Kincardine had grabbed the equalizer, . Sager scored his first goal in the second minute of play taking .a pass from Mark Rowe and beating Kincardine netminder Ken Weise. Four minutes 'later Sager com- bitted v tth 1.,11 i y Kelly to give the Steelers a 2-0 lead and Dean Bowra made it 3-0 late in the period with an unassisted effort. Kincardine got on the hoard late in the period on a goal by Sean Leach. Kincardine scored early in the second to come within one of the Steelers and at 11:24 Mark Ravelle scored the tying goal. Mike Paquette set Sager up 36 seconds later to put the Steelers hack on top to stay. In Walkerton the Steelers didn't fare so well. Walkerton jumped to a 2-0 lead in the opening period and managed to hold the Steelers off for three periods to grab the shutout victory. Paul Ber- berick scored both Walkerton goals, the first on a power play. competed for the Goderich team. The Blues grabbed the winning goal with just over four minutes remaining in the game breaking a fi goal tie. The clubs matched goals in the first two periods going into the final 20 minutes deadlocked at two.l,London scored first on a nifty three way play between Fred Israels, Bill Rivard and Barry McCarthy, McCarthy beating Oldtimer goalie Doug Spitzig at 13:20. A minute and a half later Ron AIlin tied the game with help from Ken Lee. London struck first in the second period when Len Douglas , grabbed an unassisted goal after five minutes of play. Just over two minutes later Goderich tied the game for the second time on a goal by Lee. Babe Arbour set Lee up for the equalizer. Goderich came out loaded for bear in the final period and built a two goal lead by the midway point. Allen got his second goal of the game at 1;29 of the final stanza with help from Lee and Bill Fritzley and at 7:56 Harold Leddy scored an unassisted goal boosting Goderich into a 4-2 lead. The Blues kept coming back and scored twice in one minute to tie the game for the third time. Rod Spicer.got a solo goal at 8:44 and at 9:41 Israels scored unassisted to make it 4-4. Karl Butler put Goderich on top again at 12:34 with help from Jack Meriam but the Blues scored another pair in a one minute span to put the game away.
