Commission accepts vehicles tend
The Goderich Public
Utilities Commission spent
$15;000 at its last ,meeting. to
upgrade utility equipment
and may spend another $3,000
to replace outdated equip-
ment. The commission ac-
cepted the tender of McGee
Motors of Goderich and
purchased three new trucks
for the utility and is
reviewing prices to purchase
a photo copier for office
administration..
The commission received
three tenders for the new
vehicles, one from McGee,
one from Jim Hayter and one
from Green and Parent. The
tender was called for two
pick-up trucks, one half ton -
and one three quarter ton,
and a new van. The new
vehicles are for use in the
water, meter and hydro
departments of the utility and
replace trucks already in use.
The McGee tender was for
$13,594.50 and was the lowest
of the three submitted. Jim
Hayter's hid was $14,723.80
and Green and Parent's was
$15,897.20. The tenders in-
cluded an optional measuring
device on the truck to be used
in the hydro department but
the commission decided not
to purchase the unit. The
device can be set and as the
truck is driven it measures
the amount of hydro line
along the route -of the vehic.10.
The Hayter bid listed the
device at $200, the•McGee hid
$963 and the Green and
Parent bid -at $,525. The cost
for the unit was listed over
and above the cost of the
vehicles.
In other business the
commission agreed to pur-
chase a unit .detigned to
locate leaks in water mains
after utility manager Al
Lawson requested that the
device he bought. Lawson
said the utility can save hours
of time and can save money
and water by using the unit to
locate .the leak. He said the
device costs $1,700 and will be
paid for in money saved
within two years. _
Lawson explained that the
unit operates•by-a sounding
device and can pinpoint a
water leak underground
within two or three feet.
He said the utility has
already had three leaks this
winter in water mains and
has spent hours locating them
to repair the damage.
He said the water depar-
tment has two options when a
leak occurs, wait until the
water surfaces or dig up line
until the problem is located.
He pointed out that, both.
options are inefficient, the
first because the leaking
water may surface quite a
distance from the actual leak
and the latter because
several hundred feet of line
may have to be uncovered
before the problem is found.
Lawson said the utility
office needed a new photo
copier and he and office
' manager Don McMillan
taken the liberty of shop
for machines- He said 1
-had been tried rangin
price from $1,300 to $3.200
The commission asked
Lawson and McMillan
more information and pri
of machines. They also ask
that, if possible, the purch
be made locally.
