Last week we talked about the accidental discovery of the. planet Uranus, in .1781. The next to be discovered planet, Neptune, was actually done by two mathematicians! The discoveries of these two planets • could hardly have been mfide under' more dif- ferent tircpmstandes, yet in other respects Uranus and Neptune are more alike than any two other worlds in the solar system. By 1840, the discrepancy between the position ob- served far Uranus and that predicted frons a mathematical computation of its orbit amounted to a tiny, but definitely significant amount. In other words, Uranus did 'not seem to move in an orbit that would have been predicted based on the mathematics of Newtons Laws of motion and Keplers laws of orbiting planets. The suggestion Was made that perhaps another large' planet, as yet undiscovered, existed out beyond Uranus, and its gravitational pull was causin the discrepancies in the or rt of Uranus. In 1845 an English mathematician, John Adams, sent his calculations for the predicted location for this undiscovered planet to a prominent astronomer - at Cambridge University, Sir George Airy. Airy apparently had little faith in the ability of this young, unknown mathematician and let the matter drop. Meanwhile, a French mathematician, Leverrier, unaware of Adams or his work, attacked the same problem. In 1846 he suggested to an astronomer at the Berlin Observatory where this new planet might he discovered in the sky. Fortunately for him, his suggestions were given some credence, and when a study was made of the region in the sky where he predicted the planet would be located,. the eighth planet, later named Neptune, was discovered. This was a major triumph for the theories of gravitation, and emphasized the need for astronomers and mathematicians to work hand in hand, It ranks as one of the great scientific achievements of the 19th century. Although we tend to downplay the complex mathematics required in the study of Astronomy at the high school level, stgcjents of Physics 340 at G.D.C.I. will discover the necessary in- terplay involved in the faculties of Mathematics and Astronomy.
