BY JOANNE WALTERS
Paula Butler, a Grade 13
student of numerous talents
and past accomplishments,
has earned yet another
feather for her cap.
Paula was recently a
winner in the prose section of
the Dorothy Shoemaker
Literary Award Contest. The
contest was sponsored by the
participating public libraries
of the Midwestern regional
library system in honor of a
former chief librarian of the
Kitchener public library. It
was judged by noted
Canadian authors Miriam
Waddington and Constance
Beresford -Howe who
awarded almost $1,000 in
prizes among the 26 poets and
authors who won out of more
than 900 entries from the
regions of Waterloo, Perth,
Huron and Wellington
counties.
Paula's story. entitled
Photographs; is set in
Mexico. Paula visited Mexico
a few years ago when she
attended the International
Girl Guide headquarters
there. Paula received her
Canada Cord while in
Guiding, the highest honor
bestowed upon a Girl Guide.
Beresford -Howe whr
judged the prose section of
the literary contest said the
entries had been judged not
only on technical skill and
competent or excellent use of
the language but also on the
author's ability to control
personal feelings in a story so
that others could benefit from
it. She said that Paula has a
genuine eye for telling detail
and a goodgrasp of structure.
She also said her story was
very effectively told.
Paula first heard about the
literary contest through the
Goderich Public Library
where she works on Satur-
days. She conducts the
children's story hour at the
library that day. During this
hour she reads to the
children, plays games with
them and helps them with
crafts. She also helps with the
general chores'at the library
like stocking shelves.
Paula's favorite subject at
G.D.C.I. happens to he
English. She plans to major in
it at university when she
