Irresponsible
Dear Editor:
The following statement was
released by the Ontario Minor
Hockey Association on the 8th
of Decemher, 1977..
The statements in the press
and by other sources, which
charge that in the Wiarton
pee wee situation, the
O.M..H.A. is in violation of the
order handed down in the
case of the Human Rights
issue in Huntsville, are
irresponsible - and totally
incorrect. (A girl has been
banned from playing with
Wiarton.)
The Huntsville order does
not become final and binding
on the O.M.H.A:, or make its
rules invalid, as long as an
appeal of the .decision is
before the courts.
An appeal is presently
before the courts.
If the people making these
statements, whatever their
involvement will take time to
seek legal advice, as did the
O.M.H.A., they will find that
the O.M..H.A. is conducting its
business well within the
existing laws as it is legally
and rightfully entitled to do.
The O_M.H,A. will continue
to enforce the rules, and
discipline all transgressors as
dictated by the more than
22,000 teams, which, form the
association.

Chairman W.O-A.A.,

recreation area at the corner
of Bennett and Eldon is
concerned. Onceagain, no
municipal- tax dollars are
involved in this project,
unless one measures the
maintenance after the facility
is built. And according to
Lynn Meyers, maintenance
will be minimal due to the
materials used, for con-
struction.
It has been a widely
recognized fact that Goderich
is sadly lacking in track and
field facilities as well as ball
diamonds and soccer fields. It,
is good to know that all of
these needs will be met in the
new recreation area which is
to be owned by the board of
education but utilized by the
public in the town of Goderich
and the surrounding area
alonk with the schools here.
your publication to make
mention of this, it would be
greatly appreciated'.
Thanking you in anticipation
of your assistance, 1 remain
Yours truly,
Wanda Goode,
Publicity Chairperson
Waterford.
Maintenance costs will be
shared, it is understood.
The big boosters for this
project have been the
students at `GDCI who have
already raised $11,400
towards it and have plans to
raisean additional $6,000 in
the spring. Surely the kids are
to be commended for their
efforts as well as their
teachers who obviously have
encouraged them every step
of the way.
And of course, the com-
pletion of the arena
renovations during 1977 has
been another example of the
public working together.
without using municipal tax
dollars. That project cer-
tainly was controversial and
difficult at the time, but it has
taught many lessons and
added immeasurably to the
town's inventory, bath real
and potential,
Rent review
Dear Editor, -
1 have enclosed a newly
published booklet on
Ontario's Rent Review
Program and would be
grateful if you could advise
your readers that it is now
available to anyone calling or
writing to our Rent Review
Office at 80 Dundas Street,
London.
The booklet contains
valuable information for
landlords and tenants, many
of whom mar not know about
rece.nt changes to the
Residential Premises Rent
Review Act. Some of the
highlights are as follows:
• On Octob,er 27, the
guideline for rent increases
was lowered from 8 to 6
percent to conform with the
guideline for wage increases
set by the Federal Govern-
ment's Anti -Inflation Board.
Landlords seeking rent in-
creases above 6 percent must
now apply for rent review.
Tenants may apply for
review of any increase.
• The Rent Review Act has
been extended to December
31, 1978 and landlords may
charge only one increase in a
12 -month period. This applies
to an increase authorized by a
Rent Review order or to an
increase within the guideline
limit that can be charged by a
landlord without going to
Rent Review. -
• Any proposed increase
must be based on the last rent
lawfully charged before the
increase takes effect.
• A landlord must give a
tenant written reasons, for
any proposed increase at the
same time as he gives his 90 -
day notice of the increase, If
the increase is above 6 per-
cent, the landlord must apply
for rent review at least 60
days in advance of the ef-
fective date of the increase.
• Tenants wishing to apply
for rent review/ must do so
within 60 days of receiving
notice of the proposed in-
crease.
• The time for filing a
notice of appeal with the
Appeal Boardhas been ex-
tended to 21 _ days. After a
notice is filed, a landlord or
tenant has a further 7 days to
notify the other party. Parties
unable to attend the hearing
may now apply to the Appeal
Board for permission to
appeal an order.
• It is now an offence to
charge or attempt to charge
more than one rent increase
during a 12 -month period; to
collect rent in excess of the
amount ordered by the Rent
Review Officer or the Appeal
Board, or to refuse to file an
application when ordered to
do so by a ,Rent Review
Officer.
• Summary conviction of
these offences could result in
a fine of up to $25,000 for
corporations or $2,000 for
individuals,,,The penalty
provisions remain in force
beyond' December 31, 1978 to
ensure compliance with the
legislation.
Yours sincerely,
Lesley Harris (Mrs.),
