Police Chief Pat King
reported at a Police Com-
mission meeting on Wed-
nesday, December 7 that the
'crime picture in town sojar is
a little better than last year.
However, Chief King would
urge all Christmas shoppers
to lock parcels in their cars
while shopping this year.
Like last year, said Chief
King, there has heen a rash of
thefts from vehicles. Some for stealing.
people, do their Christmas
shopping by stealing parcels According to Chief King,
out of other people's cars, he even cars in driveways

ew library budget
At the last Huron County
Library Board meeting
19ecember 7, the Library
Board approved the 1978
budget of $383,550. The
Library Board is asking
Huron County Council for a
grant of $262,822. or $4.69 per
capita for support of the
library to meet the budget.
The Library Board
operates through 2 outlets
with a staff of 35 - 40—people,
many of them being part-
time. As well as an increase
of salaries, the Library Board
is concerned about the in-
crease of the price of books.
In 1978, $100,000. has been
allocated for books and
precessing. This year they
are also faced with an in-
crease due to the drop in
Canadian exchange rates as
well as an increase in book
production. The cost of
magazines and publications
have shown a marked in-,
crease over last year. For-
tunately for the board this
year, many of the Canadian
magazines and newspapers
were paid out of Huron
County Library's $7,000
Wintario grant.
Although there has been an
increase of $18,900 over the
1977 budget the increase is
only to keep up with present
operations.
The Library supplies a wide
variety of services and
programs. To date 17,596 or 31
percent of the county
population are registered as
borrowers. As well as book
materials, the library has
film service, children's
programs, talking books and
shut-in service.
Next year $10,000 is to be
