oinsettias need sunny spot
A sure sign that Christmas
,s just around the corner is
the appearance of the popular
poinsettia in stores and
flower shops.

August,
August, according to D.B.
McNeill, Ontario ministry of
agriculture and food hor-
iculturist.
Although the plants
iginate in Mexico, cuttings
e grown in Ontario
eenhouses. The finished
ants are readily available
ross the province.
This traditional Christmas
plant is commonly known for
its blazing red petals which
are not really petals but
modified leaves, called
bracts.
The real flowers are found
in the center of the colored
bracts and are ' small and
inconspicsious.
When choosing a healthy
poinsettia, Mr. McNeill says
it is a good idea to check for
brightly -colored bracts, and
clean dark -green foliage.
Poinsettias are available in
a variety of sizes suitable for
centerpieces, table
decorations, or floor plants.
Mr. McNeill said the fullness
of the plant and the number of
cuttings per pot generally
determine the cost.
A sunny, draft -free location
with temperatures of 22
degrees C in the daytime and
18 degrees C at night is best
for poinsettias, says Mr.
McNeill. Plants should be
given lukewarm water only
when the surface soil
becomes dry to the touch.
With proper care the
poinsettia will keep its
colored bracts for several
months and can be planted in
the garden after the danger of
frost has passed.
