(staff photo) Houses made "tastefully BY JOANNE WALTERS ' When Mrs. Dorothy (Dot) Scott of RR 2 Goderich builds you a house, you can' bet it will be "tastefully" done. And while you may not be able to move into it, you sure can eat it right up. This is because Mrs. Scott's houses are made of candy! As a way of earning a bit of extra spending money for the Christmas season this year, Mrs. Scott decided to make and sell candy houses. Even if she doesn't make much money., the project itself is still a lot of fun she says. Mrs. Scott's daughter Sue Denomme of Goderich is a partne=r in the project with her mother. Right now the two are "playing it cool" until they receive some orders for the houses. They can't afford to make a lot of houses in advance until they can be sure they will have enough orders to fill. The houses sell for $6 and . Mrs. Scott says there is over $3 worth of material in them. The original house pattern Dorothy (Dot) Scott of RR 2 Goderich (left) and her daughter Sue Denomme of (ioderich put together some candy houses which they are making and selling this Christmas to earn a bit of extra spending money. The houses sell for $6. They consist of a cardboard base covered with icing with wafer cookies on the roof and jelly beans, jube jubes, candy canes, butterscotch candies, mixed hard candies and marshmallows stuck all over. A wisp of angel hair is stuck in the chimney to look like smoke and a plastic snowman is set out front in the yard of tin foil base. The houses are perfectly edible and -make nice decorations as well. (staff photo) SMILE, SMILE, SMILE "I've finally learned the routine at a self-service filling station" the woman told her husband . Their son Peter then uses this pattern to cut the house shapes out of cardboard. The cardboard house sits ona cardboard base wrapped in tin foil. This bare cardboard is then covered with icing which Mrs. Scott makes using egg whites, icing sugar and cream of tartar from a recipe in her head. Once applied CANDIES the icing has been to the cardboard, the candies can be stuck on. Mrs.. Scott uses smarties, candy canes, jube jubes, jelly beans, butterscotch candles, mixed hard candies and mar- shmallows. She buys the candy in bulk and says the price of it has tripled in the last five years. The candies aren't stuck on in any particular pattern, according to Mrs. Scott's daughter- Sue who handles this part of the project. It is better to stick them on at random, she says, and fairly quickly too before the icing hardens. The doors of the house are made of green felt. Once the bottom of the house has been completed by Sue, Mrs. Scott takes over by adding the roof, chimney and trim. The cardboard roof is covered with icing and then wafer cookies are laid on top of that. Along the front of the roof the icing is allowed to drip down slightly to look 'like hanging icicles. Next, the chimney is stuck on and covered with icing and candies with a wisp of angel Turn to page 17A • Sant.a's Little helpers. EAST GODERICH 524-4211 "Is it true Id now have to work longer to collect Unemployment Insurance? Yes. Parliament has decided that the qualification time should be longer everywhere, and that people who live in areas of high unemployment should be given certain advantages over those who live in areas where jobs are more plentiful. Which means that you now need more insurable work weeks to qualify for Unemployment Insurance benefits. • 4 "I can see why. But just how long would I have to work to be eligible?" From 10 to 14 weeks, depending on where you live. In regions of low unemployment, claimants need up to 14 ‘veeks of insurable employment to get UI benefits. This will only happen in places where it's casicr to get and keep a job. In regions of high unemployment, claimants now need as littic;.as 10 weeks to qualify. "Does this mean I'd get less or that the'payinents wouldn't last as long?" No change in payment amounts. The UI benefit rate stays at two-thirds of your average weekly insurable earnings. The maximum is $1,17, less -tax. The maximum time for which anyone may receive benefits has changed slightly, however. The old maximum was 51 weeks. Now it's 50 weeks. But since September 11, the total number of weeks for which a claimant qualifies has more closely reflected the unemployment rate in his or her region.. Right now, we measure unemployment by dividing Canada into 16 economic regions. Later in 1978, we will fine-tune the program to 54 regions so that . 'I will he even more closely related to local labou market conditions. "What else is changing about UI?" Not much. The basic two week waiting period remains the same everywhere. And so do the rules on the waiting period when a claimant has left his or her job for no good reason or been tired for misconduct: In such cases, a claimant may have to wait up to eight weeks from when employment ends until benefits start. Then there's maternity, sickness and age 65 benefits. • Previously, sickness bcnetits were only payable duririg the first 39 weeks of the claim. Now they're payable at any time during the entire benefit period. • Maternity benefits of 15 weeks and the special one-time benefit (equal to three weeks' benefits) at age 65 remain the same. The same people still pay for the program in the same proportions, and the types of employ- ment insurable for UIremain the same, too. "Would I still go to the same UI office to claim?" As explaine ^. 4 the box below, you still go to the familiar locati ' . for both UI offices and Canada Manpower Centres. Watch for changes in your area. Unemployment Insurance has changed for everyone's benefit, including yours. All we ask is that you remember your obligations as «'ell as your rights, If the need should ever arise for you to come to us, we'll make sure you get all the t' I benefits to which you are entitled by law. But you must keep up the search fora new job all the time you're getting those benefits.
