Students at Victoria and
Robertson Public Schools
often go to school with their
mothers.
Their mothers aren't at-
tending classes but they are
involved in a unique program
in which parents volunteer a
half day a• week to assist a
teacher in the classroom.
The program was initiated
in the two schools at the
beginning of October under
the leadership of Mary Lynn
Telford. The participating
parent is assigned to a
classroom, other than one her
child may be in, and assists
the teacher with a variety of
tasks. Some of the volunteer
mothers help children with
reading skills; math
rs, Jane Stokes is a volunteer parent who helps in Miss Taylor's Grade 2 class at Vic-
oria Public School every Thursday. The students like Mrs. Stokes, who helps them with
pelling, reading and some mathematics problems when Miss Taylor is busy. (staff

problems, assist in spelling,
work with small groups on
specific problems and many
other things.
The volunteer's role in the
classroom is set up by the
teacher and both the children
and the volunteer re finding
the parental involvement
very helpful.
Victoria teacher Al Leggatt
said the parent involvement
varies with each teacher but
added he likes to use his
volunteer to provide a per-
sonal touch in the classroom.
He tries to have the parent
work with a student on a one
to one basis or with small
groups.
"I like to use the volunteer
on a one to one basis or with
small groups who need help
but all the students want that
kind of attention," he said.
"It is also a good program for
the volunteers because they
found out what is going on in
the school."
Victoria Principal Don
O'Brien is very enthusiastic
about the program and its
effect on the children but
added that the parents are
also enjoying it.
He explained that they used
a low key approach to the
program and the teachers
and volunteers are working
out their own program to suit
the class.
But how do the children feel
about having an extra adult in
their class once a week? Well
most of them are excited
about the idea and look for-
ward to the day the volunteer
is in the classroom.

children appreciate the extra

the program seems to be
working for all involved,
especially the children. If you
have a volunteer in your
classroom write to Captain
Comet and tell us about her.
The Santa Claus parade on Saturday was great fun and Captain Comet was glad to have
the chance to meet several youngsters along the parade route. I certainly hope you also
got a chance to meet my friend Santa Claus who had a busy day riding in the parade and
talking to all the children in the Park Theatre. (staff photo)
