handmade puppets they had on display at their booth at the Bluewater Centre's Christmas
bazaar field by the Volunteer Association of that Centre last Wednesday. Organizers say
the bazaar had a very large attendance. All money raised will go toward the Association's
various projects involving the Centre's residents, some of whom helped make and sell
items for the bazaar. (staff photo)

ICH SIGNAL -'STAR, THURSDAY, DI C MIBE,R, gr j977114,A;, F,
There were lots of handmade dolls for sale at the Bluewater Centre's Christmas bazaar
held on Wednesday, November 30. The bazaar, organized by the Volunteer Association of
the Centre, was held to raise money for various projects involving the residents. It
boasted a large crowd. Here, Mary Clairmont of the Volunteer Association (left) and
Charlotte Wirtzfeld who was helping out at one of the booths, show off the handmade
dolls. Peg McArthur of Meneset Park was the lucky winner of the quilt draw held at the
bazaar. She donated her prize back to the Centre to help with the bazaar's proceeds. (staff

"The aim is to get in as many

In June Bridget joined the
crew of the 11 -year-old A. S.
Glossbrenner. In addition to
four-hour watches at the
wheel, she also does general
deckhand duties and says she
has yet to find a job that is
beyond her physical
capabilities.
"Of the crew of 27, five of us
are female. The other women
work either as cooks or in the
mess. The guys, I find, treat
me as one of them. I guess it
helps having six brothers.

ONE LITTLE BUMP
Learning to steer was
nerve-wracking. "That's a
long, long boat you have
behind you. Manoeuvering
isn't easy, but all I've had so
far is one little bump,
"If the captain is good and
you communicate that's .an
enormous plus. I'm so lucky.
Our skipper is absolutely
unflappable."
Pay in her first year, she
estimates, will "clear $450 a
month in addition to excellent
food and a comfortable cabin.
In my second year I should be
getting $700 monthly, up to
around $980 by year three."
Bill Robinson, who started
as a deck hand in 1958, says
working conditions have
improved immensely during
this time.
"The lowest paid members
of the crew, male or female,
should be able to clear $12,000
in a nine month season. The
average for chief officers is
around 330,000.
"Young people are joining
us but they are not staying. I
guess there's too much'going
on these days ashore."
Direct control of the engine
room from the bridge means
a quicker reaction in an
emergency.
