T salute
to
Sesquicentennial
BY SHIRLEY J.
KELLER
Shamalot or The Shaming
of the True was especially
written by Mark, The
Traveller's Son (Brian
Markson) for Gode,rich Little
Theatre as its salute to
Goderich's Sesquicentennial.
It played last Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday and
Saturday to full houses in
MacKay Hall.
Dubbed a "spoof of
Goderich in three acts" by
the author, Shamalot was just
that, • There was plenty to
attach the original production
to The Prettiest Town - in
Canada - everything from
references to the town's
closing on Wednesdays to the
lack of transportation in or
out of the community.
The dialogue was witty and
imaginative but un-
fortunately, audiences
missed all of the fun because
there was too much to absorb
in the raid -fire one-liner
show which lasted only about
90 minutes including in-
termissions. As one patron
explained, 'I'd have to conic.
back again tomorrow'evening
to pick up on some of the
parts I just didn't have time
for tonight." In short. the
play was hard work for the
audiences who had to be on
their toes every second or
miss part of the enjoyment.
According to the program.
Mayor Deb Shewfelt read the
script of the show before, it
was produced and heartily
endorsed the play, adding." I
do firmly believe that all the
world's a stage and in politics
it is essential to have a sense
of humor.'.'
On Thursday evening,
Mayor Deb Shewfelt and his
wife Barbara were among the
members of the audience,
and the mayor did indeed
appear to be enjoying the
play. which was set in the
Kingdom of the Felt Shew.
But the general audience
hadn't read the script and
were at a slight disadvantage
because of it.
The cast of the show was
large - 25 listed in . the
program and some others not
listed making appearances on
stage .... such as author
Markson himself in a heavy
hooded robe looking very
much like a musical monk.
Of course there were some
standouts. Top acting award
must surely go to Rob
McEwen who in recent years
has added so very much to
GDCI drama club per-
formances. Rob was simply
excellent as Sir Gallantlad
Medicare, Sanitary Officer
whose antics on stage left the
audience laughing in all the
right places. Best of all was
. Rob's portrayal of a drunken
sanitary officer and. when he
collapsed on stage doing a bit
of a back flip in the bargain, it
seemed as though he was
noth ing hues ra g doll so limp
and lifeless he was:
Daffy The Diller a Real Dilly
played by Betty Wehh was
also great. Daffy wanted
everyone to "Make love, not
war'• and showed Sir
Gallantland Medicare that
she meant what she said.
Betty managed also to deliver
the clever lines in the show
with enough attention to
detail that the audience
understood what was in-
tended by there. It was clear
that Daffy was a favorite with
the G LT fans.
Kathy Jenkins, the
perennial darling of GLT ,
didn't let the audiences down,
either. Kathy is always
superb on stage and as Lady
Bodwain, wife of Sir Bodwain
the Bobby, Chief of Police
(quite naturally portrayed by
Goderich Police Chief Pat
King) Kathy was once again a
top performer. Often Kathy's
facial expressions tell most of
the story, and this show was
no exception. She was
properly devilish yet her lines
were spoken with such im-
peccable care that everyone
grabbed the meaning with
ease.
Honorable mentions go to
Pat King who is such a ham
that he looked positively
ridiculous as the over -weight
Sir Bodwain with the stub-
born hair; to Jed DeJong,
another GDCI drama club
graduate who played Nish, A
Dane (Danish, get it?); to
Andy Markson who sang the
lead part during the chorus in
the woods and did it
remarkably well; and to
Clarence Knight who as King
Deb was as much like Deb
Shewfelt as Deb Shewfelt
himself.
Of specia'lc-Rtention also is
the costuming for the show. It
was absolutely tremendous.
