I have just arrived in from Captain Goderich from another galaxy and have taken on a ): 43/4 I guess Captain Comet doesn't have to tell anyone that Santa Claus will be making his Christmas rounds in just a few short weeks. And boy are you in luck. You see Santa is a good friend of the of Captain here and if you want to make sure that he gets your letter then just send it to me and I will be sure and deliver it. Or maybe we could just print them in BY THE G.D.C.I. SCIENCE DEPARTMENT Recent newspaper articles about the discovery of a possible 10th alanet in our solar system ave revived public interest in astronomy. This kind of interest is im- portant to teachers of •,a science. It makes his task of teaching science, and astronomy in particular, an easier one. The general level physics taught at the Goderich District Collegiate (Phy340) includes several weeks of Astronomy, a topic that never Don't miss Santa Be sure you don't miss the annual Santa Claus Parade Saturday. The town of Goderich is sponsoring the Santa Claus Parade, Saturday beginning at 2 p.m. The parade will follow the usual route up South Street to and around the Square. But this year the parade will only make one trip around the Square so watch closely. The theme o_ f this year's parade is A Cartoon Christmas and ap- proximately 20 to .25 groups and industries are entering floats. The parade will also feature a couple of bands and the main attraction of course is Santa's float.'~ All children will have a chance to meet Santa Claus after the parade in Santa's court in the Park theatre. Santa and his helpers will be handing out treats and it certainly is a good chance to tell Santa exactly what you wanted for Christmas. The Ladies of/ the Beta Theta Sigma -Phi sorority with the help of the Goderich Rangers will assist at Santa's Court. Also before the parade there will be a special cartoon showing at the Park Theatre so check the paper for details and enjoy the day. fails to develop interest on the part of the students who take it. What about the previous discovery of planets? There are some interesting stories to tell about them. The larger ' planets, and the ones close to the earth, are easily visible. Jupiter, for example, the largest planet in our system, is currently the second brightest object in the sky, clearly Visible in the eastern sky each evening. Venus, the perennial "evening star" is also visible during the winter months in the western sky. Saturn, Mars and even tiny Mercury are visible to the naked eye at various times of the year. Their curious "wanderings" through the background of stars have intrigued observers and philosophers throughout . the years. The planet Uranus, which appears as a very faint point of light, was discovered quite by accident by the German - English astronomer, William Herschel. In March of 1781 he was- making a routine telescopic survey of a portion of the sky and noted that the paper and send one to Santa. He likes to read the news. So kids. don't forget. To make sure that Santa knows what you want for Christmas send your letter to Captain Comet at the Signal -Star in Goderich. Make sure you write early because Santa gets plenty of letters to read before Christmas. new mission with the' Goderich Signal -Star. And that mission is to produce a' children's section in the Signal -Star every week. That's right. Each week the Captain will prepare a page of stories, pictures, some interesting aspects of the world of science and things to do just for kids. In fact, I hope it will be just like 'having your very own newspaper each week. But this new mission is a very unusual and :Unique one for the Captain' and I . Will have to 'Ask all the young readers for some assistance` with this project: Maybe you could help the . Captain by writing a letter and giving me an idea of what type of things would be of ''interest for our readers. He first thought it might be a comet, but after several months of careful observations he calculated the orbit to be nearly circular, lying beyond that of the planet Saturn. It was unquestionably a new planet! Whereas the discovery of Uranus was quite unex- pected, the discovery of the next planet, Neptune, was actually the -result of a mathematical prediction. In the years following the discovery of Uranus, astronomers carefully plotted its orbit. By 1840 there ap- peared to be a discrepancy between its observed position and ' what mathematical calculations predicted for its orbit. Could another, yet undiscovered planet, with a strong gravitational pull be causing this discrepancy in the orbit or Uranus? (In our next article, we will describe how the discovery of Neptune was made.) hei 1! 8,3 ei til ill Santa Claus made his annual visit to the town of Goderich in the parade last year and will be back on the float for the Santa Claus parade this Saturday.
