The Goderich Signal-Star, 1977-11-17, Page 2240, 1q PAGE 2A—GODERICH, SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 17, 1977 !eople' inparticular The Goderich Fire Department has implemented a new system of alerting firemen when there is a fire. Once the new system is perfected and proved safe proof, the siren will no longer be sounded in this town. Instead, the firemen will be alerted by pagers or monitors similar to those worn by doctors on call. These monitors can be worn on the Where's the fire? Only the will know firemen's belts. They emit a loud beeping noise when a call comes into the department. Pictured left to right are, Doug Musselman of Bell Canada's Radio Communication Systems who installed the new system last week, G.F.D. chief Ralph Kingswell and councillor Bob Allen representing the town. (staff photo) firemen or sure Goderich citizens may soon cease to wonder where the fires are in this town. It isn't because there won't be any more fires to worry about, but because the alarm will . no longer he sounded when there is a fire. As of last week, the Goderich Fire Department implemented a new method of alerting firemen to a fire without the use of the old alarm system. The old system involved fire phones which were in- stalled in six firemen's homes, the fire hall and the police station. When someone called the emergency fire number all the phones would ring. At least one person would answer a phone and collect the information regarding the fire's location. This person would then sound the alarm by pushing a key attached to the phone. This person (usually a fireman's wife) then also.had to telephone all the firemen to alert them in case they did not hear the alarm. Under the new system, the fire phones will still exist but when these phones ring, a key will automatically be hit and that key will give a tone signal to a radio monitor or pager which each fireman will wear on his belt. These monitors are similar to those worn by doctors who are on call but away from the hospital. They emit a loud keeping sound. The fireman can hear his monitor. even if he is within a 10 or 11 mile radius of town. When the monitor sounds, the firemen go directly to the fire hall where they find out the fire's location. The monitors also act as a one way walkie talkie. The bay station or truck mobile radios can be used by the fire chief or whoever i, available to give the other firemen in- structions because the voice can be heard through the monitors. Each fireman has a unit in his home for recharging the monitor's battery. The monitors are still capable of producing the noise while they are in the unit being recharged. Industries in town with automatic sprinkler systems that go off in the event of fire will also he included in the new monitor system. The sprinklers will trip a circuit to turn the monitors on..At the fire hall a panel box then tells the firemen the location of the fire. At present there are 21 monitors and three main- tenance spares. They are being used on a rental basis until they are fully tested. Once the new system has been proven fail safe, the old fire siren will he discon- nected. The siren will con- tinue to ring for now until the system has been used for awhile. The new system will eliminate hours of work for those firemen's wives who had the task of calling all the firemen every time the alarm sounded under the old system. And since the siren will no longer he rung, people in the immediate area will no longer he awakened by it at night. Also people will no longer become alarmed as they once die] by the sound of the siren. The new system will even eliminate the old problem of fire truck chasers. These are people who, upon hearing the alarm, rush to the fire hall and follow the .trucks usually getting in the way and posing a general nuisance to firemen..
