There has been con- siderable debate in the Ontario Legislature on the subject of the planned lay-off New play at Blyth Pauline Johnson, a woman who was half Indian, half English, was one of Canada's most respected poets. The play has toured extensively throughout Ontario, and has been extremely popular with high school. audiences. However, the programme's appeal is not restricted to one particular age group. Radio system approved of 2,800 Sudbury workers by Inco - which it is predicted will actually mean a loss of some 6,000 jobs in the Sud- bury area. One reason put forward for this loss of em- ployment is the fact that Canada and Ontario's share of the world nickel market has dropped rapidly in recent years. as other areas have developed their deposits. In 1966 this country's share of the market was 51 per cent: it had declined to 34 per cent by l95. Opposition Parties have urged that the Legislature's Committee on Resource Development should go to Sudbury to hear local sub- missions and to discuss the matter with municipal and labour officials. Replying to a question from Liberal Jehu -. S .ve''aey (Kitchener -Wilmot) the Minister of Housing admitted that the Government will make a profit of $3 million on a $5 million investment in land in Kitchener. The land was Nought for $750,000, servicing costs were $4,350,000, and the selling price is $8,070,000. The other towns involved, Goderich, Seaforth, Wingham and Exeter have already approved the idea. From here, the proposal - now goes to the Ontario Police Commission where the final decisions will be made, Approval by the commission depends on whether provincial funds are available. According to the recom- mendation from the municipalities, the province will pay for 75 per cent of the estimated cost of setting up the system. The estimated set up costs to purchase the radio transmitters and equipment has been set at $70,000. The peoposal noted that the five towns would pay 25 per cent and the annual costs of approximately 54,135. Clinton council also noted that they want the annual costs to be shared on a per capita basis. However, details would have to be worked out with the other plans. Along with the question of whether the OPC will approve the plan, it is still unknown where the dispatch will be located. Both Clinton and Goderich have offered to house the control centre but an OPC study will decide where the headquarters are to be situated.
