Juniors vault into first
by TD
The GDCI junior Vikings
defeated Listowel Lords 28-13
here last Thursday in Huron
Perth Conference football
action.
The victory moved the
Vikings into a first place tie
with Exeter South Huron and
Stratford Central. All three
teams have records of five
wins and one loss. In each
case, the team's only loss has
been to one of the other top
place teams, thus creating a
long -jam at the top of the
Conference standings. The
last games of the regular
schedule were played on
Tuesday, wi'h the Wingham
Madill Mustangs here against
the Vikings. The semi-final
playoff games will be played
next Tuesday. Location of the
games will depend on the
final standings.
Listowel jumped off to a
quick start here Thursday,
scoring a touchdown on the
first offensive series of the
game. The 70 yard drive was
capped by a two yard run on
an option play by Tom Kerr.
However, the Vikings came
back with two touchdowns of
their own before the end of
the opening quarter. The first
came when Steve Arbour and
Mike Hodges gave a rep
performance of a "
la P
which gave them a touc -
down Iasi week against
Exeter. Following a Viking
punt into the Listowel end
zone, Arbour put a crunching
tackle on the Listowel
receiver, the ball came loose
and the ever -alert Hodges fell
on it for the six points.
The second Viking major
came on a 28 -yard sweep by
Arbour, running behind some
excellent blocking provided
by pulling guards Larry
Madge and Rob Trebish. A
pass from quarterback Dan
Maillet to Hodges gave the
Vikings a two-point con-
version.
Good outside blocking by
the guards and halfbacks
sprung Stuart Crew loose for
a 70 -yard touchdown run in
the second quarter, to in-
crease the Viking's lead.
Greg Ferris kicked the
convert. -
Tom Kerr scored his second
touchdown for Listowel on a
one -yard off -tackle dive play
and Jamie Stone kicked a 40 -
yard single for the Lords to
make the half-time score 2,1-
13 in favour of the Vikings.
The 'only scoring in the
second half was a third
quarter Viking touchdown by
Mike Hodges on a 13 -yard
sweep. Ferris again kicked
the convert.
The Vikings offence
generated a total of 304 yards
gained compared to
Listowel's total of 238 yards.
Steve Arbour picked up 135
yards rushing for the Vikings.
'The power -running tailback,
however, was lost to the
Vikings again by the end of
the game with a recurring
shoulder injury which may
keep him out of action for the
remainder of the season.
Viking defensive backs Steve Chase (25), Dennis Donnelly Vikings gave up the first major score of the season to

Vikings complete season
with perfect record
by TD
The GDCI senior Vikings
wrapped up a perfect season
in Huron Perth Conference
football play here last
Thursday with a 17-6 victory
over Listowel Lords.
The victory gave the
Vikings a record of six wins
and no losses for their regular
season performance. The
Listowel touchdown, scored
by John Wilson in the last
minute of play in the game,
was the only one given up by
the tough Viking 'defence in
the six regular season games.
The play went R5 yards
following a pass that was
deflected by two Viking
defenders before Wilson
latched onto it Even then a
spirited effort by Dave
MacKenzie stopped the
Listowel receiver on the
Viking one yard line. From
there, it took three cracks at
the Viking defence to give the
Lords their touchdown.
The Vikings led 10-0 at
halftime on the strength of a
G9 -yard touchdown on a pass
and run play from quar-
terback Bill Walters -to Dave
MacKenzie, converted by
Eric Mitchell, and a 30 -yard
^field goal kicked by Mitchell.
The only other scoring was
a third quarter touchdown by
the Vikings' Randy Little on a
52 -yard sweep. Mitchell again
kicked the convert.
Coach Ray Donnelly felt his
Vikings had not distinguished
themselves against the
Lords, A below average job of
blocking and the failure of the
running backs to run with

their usual author.ity were
two things Donnelly singled
out. He felt that the Vikings
might have been somewhat
intimidated by the early
aggressive play of the Lords.
Donnelly also felt that
perhaps the Vikings had
continued to try to run inside
against the Lords when they
should have started to go
outside.
Defensively, the Vikings
played well, allowing
Listowel a total of only 175
yards gained.
The Vikings enter semi-
final play here next Tuesday
against the team which
finishes fourth in the regular
schedule.
