As a teenager .I went
through a "wild spell"
resulting in two terms in
prison. I have heard that there
is now a law in Ontario which
premits a person to get a
"clean slate" after a certain
time.
Can you tell me if this is
correct, and if so, how do I go
about it?
My thanks for any help you
can offer me.
Yes, we too have heard that
such a law does exist but must
confess that our knowledge
concerning it is rather sparse.
As far as we know it only
applies to certain first of-
fenders after a five year
period.
We have written the
Minister of Corrections in
Toronto for complete details
and will be pleased to forward
you on a copy of his reply,

Our helpful friend J.E. of
the Ontario Ministry of
Consumer and Commercial
Relations recently. mailed
IMPACT a very informative
bulletin published to help the
public avoid home repair and
renovation rip-offs. Here are
some excerpts:
A common dodge in the.
home renovating business is
the offerlof a "good deal" by a
door-to-door salesman
because "we just happen to be
in the neighbourhood with all
our material and equipment."
Don't fall for that pressure
tactic. Ask the salesman for
the names of neighbours who
had work done and get their
opinion.
If you do decide to sign a
contract. find out who does the'
actual- work. In many cases.
the salesman may simply sell
the signed contract to another
company.
It's a good idea to keep an
eye on work in progress. You
may be able to spot problems
and have them corrected
before the job is completed.
Never sign a completion
certificate until the work has
been finished to your
satisfaction.
Despite all precautions you
may still find yourself the
victim of unethical business
practices. In such cases there
are several alternatives.
Under The Consumer
Protection Act, you may
cancel an executory contract
(one where delivery payment
and performance of work
remain to be completed)
signed in your home by sen-
ding a registered letter to the
company within 48 hours — or
two full working days — of
signing.

Protection• Act and The
Business Practices Act, write:
