Fossils and Newsprint
Rev. D. Bruce Johnson
The United Church of Canada
On one side of my study is a shelf of fossils
that l found in the bad lands, south of Medi-
cine Flat. They are 70 or 80 million years old.
On the other side of my study is a bulletin
board on which among other things IL tack up
newspaper clippings. They are of temporary
interest. Most of them can be taken down and
discarded in a week. Vet they are important
at the time.
My desk is some place in between the fos-
sils and the newsprint.
1 work in the tension that exists between the
Past and the Present.
Traditionalists point my nose in the direc-
tion of the fossils. The innovators, the Now
Generation, the Mod Squad twist my head
toward the current events on the bulletin
board.
1 like my desk where it is. It allows reverence
for the past but at the sante time excitement
over this moriliitg's newscast.
Commitment and Openness! It is the
balance between these two elements • that
leads to health and fulfilment. Absolute com-
mitment to the. best a man knows ,at the mo-
ment can he combined with constant openness
to new truth.
It is one tiling to believe in God but quite
another to recognize that belief grows. The
believer has an amazing future.
"Eye hath not seen nor ear heard neither has
it entered into the heart of man what God.has
in store for those who love him."
Written for this newspaper by the Reverend D Bruce
Johnson minister of Grosvenor Park United Church, 407
Cumberland Ave. S., Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, S7H 2L3.
