Halward, plant a flower arranger also with October 12. 'Their visit was
ator with the Royal the RoyaJ Botanical Gardens made possible free of charge
ical Gardens of visited the Bluewater Centre to the Centre through
on and Betty Peebles, at Goderich on Wednesday, Outreach Ontario, a progra
supported by the Ontario
Ministry of Culture acid
Recreation.
A morning session at the
Centre included a presen-
tation to those residents in the
Centre's Farm and Garden
program. The residents were
showed methods of flower
arranging and each one made
his own individual
greenhouse using plant slips.
In the afternoon, residents,
staff, local garden clubs,
some Huronview residents
and other interested people
were invited to a session
including plant propagation,
flower arranging and bottle
gardening,
Mrs. Peebles gave a
demonstration on mak in
Christmas decorations wit
plants and flowers. These
decorations -included door
hangings and table cen-
trepieces. Mrs. Peebles' first
creation was a pine swag door
hanging which she made out
of pine branches and
waterproof velvet ribbon.
Next she shaped 0 piece of
moss. on a 27 -inch idng
chicken wire frame so that it
resembled 0 candy cane. She
decorated it with ribbon and
small pieces of evergreen.
The moss, she explained,
dries out and can therefore
easily be stored for the
following year.
Wv1rs. Peebles took nine,
seven, five and three-inch
pieces of juniper and stuck
them in a potato at various
angles so that they would fall
forward. This decoration,
called a potato ball, can be
used as a table centre. or it

explained that depth is very
important in flower
arranging and this depth can
be achieved by using plants of
varying length and placing
them at different angles. For
her creations Mrs. Peebles
used a styrofoam base but she
explained that styrofoam will

be used as well and itwwill hold
• water,
tt Mrs. Peebles made several
candle decorations for table
centres. Explaining that
flowers are often expensive
around Christmas time, she
showed the audience how to
make their own. Some of
these hand -made flowers
were constructed out of pine
cones which Mrs: Peebles
said should he gathered
before the snow falls.
If using real flowers for
decorations, Mrs. Peebles
said to make sure that the
plant material is in good
shape. The stems should be
firm and the flowers
shou Idn't he brown.
When decorating candles
with flowers, Mrs. Peebles
said to make sure the plant
materia) does not touch the
candle fl:inme.

women in the relationship of
husband and wife.
At the time of wedding each
new spouse alters his or her
societal position. In general,
the more male -centered and
male -dominant the culture,
the greater is the significance
for women of this change in
societal position, In
traditional China the woman
was expected practically to
forgether blood relatives and
move into the social orbit of
her husband's kinsmen.
Although the American
culture is not as strictly in-
clined as traditional Chinese,
the change from unmarried
to married status is still much
more profound for women
than for men, as is sym-
bolized by the wedding ring
and the change in name.

Like most people, I buy all
the lottery tickets when they
come out, but many times I
never get the chance to see the
winning numbers. Sometimes
I'm able to get them from the
TV or radio but now the
Wintario has a hundred
"special winners" and they
are not announced.
Any chance of publishing
the winning numbers in IM-
PACT?
I'm sure this would be a
good service to many people
like myself.
We'll try anything once, (or
almost anything!) and see
what reaction we get from our
regular readers. You un-
derstand of course, that all the
Wintario draws are made on a
Thursday, so IMPACT would
he publishing them a week
late.
However that appears to be
your main point, a service for
readers who missed the
numbers originally.
