"I'm sure that if council
came up with a five or ten

town could easily handle
them," he said. "If it doesn't
then there may be some years

Walls said that if he could
have taken the same step to
county government here he
would have stayed in
Goderich rather than leave
for another county and
another town or city.
He liked living here and
leaves with some reluctance.
Each time one leaves a
town that has been home one
leaves a little bit of oneself
there," Walls said quietly._

Canada has one of the most comprehensive
.UI programs in the western world.
It has a relatively short entrance period and
pays benefits longer. And almost all Canadians
share in the cost and benefits of the pm
13v reducing the financial shock of. people's
movements from one job to another,
unemployment insurance has helped to keep our
workforce adaptable to today's rapidly changing
social and economic conditions.
"Sure. But what about
the cost to Canadians?"
Certainly, the dollar figures. are high. This
year's I. '1 payout to Canadians will approach four
Killion dollars.
13ut consider that figure in light of the -
ultimate benefits to the country.
"IIIc t'I program gives temporary financial
aid to hundreds of thousands of Canadians while
they're between jobs.
"Isn't UI really just
another kind of welfare?"
Far from it. Welfare money is paid only
according to need.
i'nemplovment insurance money is paid
according to eligibility,
It's like any other kind of insurance. If vnu've
worked in insurable employment, and a situation
arises which entitles you tomake a claim, that
claim will he settled as quickly and courteously as
possihlc.
wliat do you do about
cheaters and abuse?"
'Phare are fewer cheaters and abusers than
some would have You believe. '
Outright criminal fraud is dealt with through
conventional channels.
Some people abuse the system without even
knowing it. Here, and at times when the abuse is
not really criminal in nature, we have our own staff
to handle the problems.
In any case, the vast majority Of t '1 claimants
deal with us as fairly as we try to deal with then).
„ "How about when I make a
claim and you say "no"?
If you have good reason to disagree with any .
decision a 1'I agent makes on your claim, You have'
the right to appeal that_ decision to an independent
and impartial hoard of referees, or then an 1 'mpire

And if new information conies to light heblre
or during the appeal, You can go hack to your
agent and ask fitr a rvvicw of the decision. And the
whole appeal process is free.

I purchased a purebred
Chihuahua in May -'76. I, as the
owner, completed and sent the
registration papers along with
a cheque to the Canadian
Kennel! Club in Toronto. This
cheque was promptly cashed
but to date have heard
nothing, in spite of writing
them.
Would you be kind enough to
see if you can get me some
results as I do want to breed
the dog.
We wrote the Canadian
Kennel Club and, since then
our reader has received an
acknowledgment from their
registration division.
Uraortunately however, it
does little to ease her mind as
it still leaves doubt as to
whether the dog is actually a
registered purebred or not.
We are prepared to make a
personal call if our latest _
letter doesn't clarify the
situation.

Away back last fall I an-
swered an ad in the London
Free Press TV Times for a
solid maplewood colonial
pedestal. I sent a money order
as requested 'in the ad to the
Danville Maplewood
Collection in Scarborough,
Ontario.
After a long wait I wrote
them and finally received a
reply in May from Columbia
House in Don'Mills, Ontario, to
say that my order would be
forthcoming.
Six months later and still
nothing! I'm fed up and want
my money back, can you help,
please?
According to a reply we
received, the long delay has
been caused by an unexpected
response for this particular
item, but they claim new stock
is expected' and that our
reader's order will shortly he
filled. No word about a refund
though!
