They begin about three weeks before the fair and work from early morning until late at night. They make so many candles that they often lose count. Their booth will be open at Saltford Valley Hall on Saturday from 10 a,m. to 8 p.m. (staff photo) Dorothy Fisher and Evelyn Allin, both of Goderich, have been making candles for Colborne Township's Christmas Country Fair since it started 12 years ago. In fact they have been making candles for so many years that Evelyn' Hardy, convenor of the fair, calls them "our c ndle girls,,-,___ For three weeks ,traight now, Mrs. Fisher and Mrs. Allin have been busy making their candles from early morning until late at night. "We really don't take time off for anything," they say. Mrs. Fisher's house on Lighthouse Street is full of candles of all shapes and sizes before the fair. There are so many of them that the ladies lose count. They just keep churning them out until they estimate that they have enough to sell at the fair. They try to come up with new ideas every year. They read hooks on candle making, get ideas for their candles from others they see in the stores and they experiment on their own. They have never taken any candle courses but wish there were some to take. "We've had lots of flukes," they laugh. They tell about the time they tried to make a candle in a baUoon the way they had seen it done in a magazine. But they forgot to fill the balloon with cold water before dipping it in wax. The balloon, exploded and Mrs. Fisher was covered from head to toe in green wax. The ladies have to send to admire their creativity from the U.S. for many of their time to time. materials like wax and dyes. This year the ladies have been collecting dried flowers and pressing them in books to be later glued onto the can- dles in various designs. Using spray glue, the stick on violets, black eyed susans, forget me nots, maple leaves and even butterflies.. After these decorations are glued on the candle it must be dipped in wax again to hold them secure. Some of the candles are scented with raspberry, strawberry and orange blossom scents. As to the candle designs, the laches say, "We just go by what we like." Sometimes they say they get carried away but they like to stand back and Mrs. Fisher and Mrs. Allin say they thoroughly enjoy making candles. "We do it just for fun." They say that you have to be interested in it or you certainly wouldn't care to be doing it at all. "It's not something you could do all year round,"`they say. But Mrs. Fisher says it gives her somethinng to think about all year round. When she goes away she is always looking for dried flowers to glue on -the candles or thinking up new designs. "You never have to be in low spirits if you've got a hobby," says Mrs. Fisher, Mrs. Fisher and Mrs. Allin will have their candle booth open at the fair at Saltford Valley Hall on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The fair will also feature oil painting, antiques, mosaic glass, barnboard painting, weaving and leather crafts, jewellery, sand sculpture, quilts, toys, knitwear, pottery and home made baking.
