HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1977-10-13, Page 14PAGE l4- 3ODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13, 1977 Californians visit relatives Recent visitors with Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Johnston and Miss Laura Phillips were their cousins, Mr. and Mrs. Randall Currie of Ontario, California. The Curries left their home September 15 and made stops with relatives in Kelowna, B.C., Calgary Alberta, Moose Jaw, Swift. Current, Weyburn and Yellow Grass, Sask., Toronto and Stratford, arriving in Auburn on October 1. While here they have met relatives at Seaforth, Blyth, Belgrave, Wingham, Whitechurch, Lucknow and Goderich. Mr. Currie is a grandson of the late Margaret Philips and James Stein who left the Township of East Wawanosh to go to Yellow Grass, Sask, in the early 1900s. His mother, the late Mary Stein married Charles Currie and sixty years ago they left Saskat- chewan and settled in California where Randall received his early education. He served five years with the correspondent, 526-7595 U.S. A. navy.. He married Mona Boyd of Ontario, California 28 years ago. They have two children, Joan and Chuck of Ontario, California. Mrs. Currie is a Spanish teacher at Chaffey High School, Ontario California. The Chaffey Brothers from Ontario, Canada founded that city in the late 1890s. Ontario, California is located about 30 miles east of Los Angeles and Chaffey High School was so named in 1910 in honour of the founders of the community. Mrs. Currie had the pleasure of visiting the Goderich District Collegiate and the staff and this coming week has an interview -with New York teachers. Mrs. Currie is on sabbatical leave to prepare a work book for Spanish speaking students who do not know how to read and write Spanish, After spending three days with Mr. and Mrs. Stanley McNall at Welland, the Curries will continue their trip through Maine, New Jersey, Ohio and Minnesota and back home by November 1. Both Mr. and Mrs. Currie were much impressed by the beautiful color of maple trees and scenery. Irrigation is necessary in Ontario, California because Mr. Currie has`an orange and a lemon grove. members are taking the Featuring Fruit project this fall. In the senior program there will be Tricks with a Mix and personalizing your pattern available to all members and those in- terested. , Mr. Richard Boonstra, the new supervisor of Family and Children's services in Huron County spoke for the Huron County Bursary which was made through Rally funds. He stated that five children have been assisted to com- plete their schooling this past year through Bursary funds. The members voted to again Auburn news Eleanor Bradnock, W.I. RALLY One hundred and thirty-five delegates from the Women's Institutes in Huron County met last Monday for their annual rally at the Howick Community Centre with the Lakelet Branch as hostesses. Mrs. John Freeman, president of Huron East presided for the day long program. Mrs. Percy Huth of Lakelet was pianist. Mrs. Ena Wallace., Provincial Board Director of Lakelet welcomed all and greetings from Huron West were brought by president. Mrs. Graham McNee and from Huron South by Mrs. Grace Drummond. The minutes of last year's rally were read by the secretary, Mrs. James Armstrong, R.R. 3 Brussels, Mrs. R. McCall gave the auditors report. Mrs. Richard Buchanan, R .R. 6 Goderich, secretary for Huron West, reported 408 members in the 12 branches and r told the highlights of the branches. Mrs. Michel Connelley reported 201 members in their nine branches in Huron south and Mrs. Elva Jacques reported 256 members in their two branches. Mrs. Mervyn Batkin, secretary of the Historical Society, outlined the past year's activities and spoke of the work of the late Judge Hays with the Society and stated that Mr. Harry Worsell of Goderich is now president. Mrs. Batkin stated that there are 180 members and that 22 branches have made their curators members. The next meeting will be held at Dungannon on October 19th. An interesting skit was put on by Ethel Branch and greetings from the Federated Womens Institutes of Ontario were brought by Mrs. William Forter of the London area and Mrs. Ena Wallace of the Guelph area. Home economists Misses Bea McLellaghan and Grace Bird spoke of the 4-H program in the County and told that Huron is the only county in„ the province with two home economists. They told about the change in design of the 4-H spoons and certificates and said that 990 by a film, Visible English. He spoke of_ the different schools and shops available and the advanced training at George Brown University. Mrs. McCall of Brussels thanked Mr. Findlay for his in- formative address and presented him with a gfit. Mrs. Graham McNee 'of Dungannon, president of Huron West District presented the scholarship to Miss Shirley Dougherty, R.R. 6 Goderich, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Dougherty, R.R. 6 Goderich. Shirley was unable to be present as she is attending the Agriculture College at Centralia and taking the Food Service Management course. She was selected for her 4-H work in the calf club and homemaking courses through leadership in Tiber Dunlop Women's Institute. The president of the -Tiger Dunlop W.I., Mrs. Earl Sherwood accepted the scholarship certificate and cheque on behalf of Shirley. Mr. Robert Gibson, Gorrie, chairman of the catering service at the Huron County Ploughing match spoke of the proposed plans and stated that he was looking for co- operation from all Women's Institutes in Huron County. The presidents of the three Districts were named a committee, Mrs. Graham McNee, Huron -West, Mrs. Grace Drummond, Huron - South and Mrs. John Freeman, Huron East. Mrs. Drummond expressed thanks to all who had assisted in any way to make such a successful day. Mrs. Lorne Hunking of Londesboro extended an invitation to hold the 1978 Rally, the first Monday in October at Lon- desboro. support the bursary fund by sending 50 cents per member from all Huron County members. This will be for- warded with the fee sheet next February. Mrs. Connie .Colclough of Clinton reported on Huron - view and asked all members to help with the annual bazaar on October 19 with home baking and articles to sell. Mrs. Ivan Wightman, Belgrave, chairman of the Women part• in the Huron County Ploughing Match reported on the navy and gold suits that are being made to wear at the match in 1978 near , Wingham. Material is available at Mary's Sewing Centre in Clinton. She showed the badges made for the Huron County Women's Institutes and these have to be ordered by December 1, Mrs. William Porter will be in charge of the Drop In centre where coffee and cookies will be served. Displays showing the work of the W.Ls will be in the charge of Mrs. Porter assisted by the District conveners. Ten dozen cookies and three pounds of coffee will be supplied by each of the district members. The afternoon session which was opened with 0 Canada had as special from Walton W.I., Mrs. Neil McGavin as song leader with Mrs. William Humphreys at the piano. They led in a rousing sing -song. Mrs. Jack Ferguson in- troduced the guest speaker, Mr. Glenn Findlay of Milton, teacher at the E.C. Drury School for the Hearing Impaired at Milton. He took as his message, Those Who Do Not Hear Anytime, stressing speech and how to speak. This type of schooling was started by Alexander' Graham Bell over 110 years ago to help the deaf pupils. He told about to -day's method, using visual aids and demonstrated methods now VILLAGE MEETING Auburn is to have new street lights is was -tee- highlight announcement at the monthly meeting heldlast Saturday evening at the town hall. The chairman, Warner Andrews presided 'and the minutes were adopted as read by Frank Raithby, village clerk. Hydro officials will soon announce when and where the new lights will be installed. There will be about 35 to 38 lights while now there are 40. Nearly all those were installed about fifty years ago when electricity came to this village. In regards to the Dog By-law it will be advertised soon in the local papers and then action will he taken to keep them under control. SOCIAL NEWS Mr. and Mrs. Douglas MacDonald and three children from Ashfield Township are welcomed to the village, They moved in recently to the house owned by Mr. and Mrs. Bud Chamney. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Keller of Dublin visited one day last week with Mr. and Mrs, Harry Arthur. Mrs. Jessie Naylor moved last week to Goderich. Mr. and Mrs. John Stadelmann, Christine, Rhonda and Jennifer of R.R. 2 Blyth visited with Mrs. Eleanor Bradnock on Thanksgiving Sunday,., Miss Jean Houston and Miss Jean Jamieson of Toronto and Mrs. Frances Clark returned last week -end from a motor trip to the West Coast where they visited friends on Galiano Island, British Columbia. Mr, and Mrs. Ed Davies visited last week for three days with Mr. and Mrs. John Morrison at Tillsonburg. Mr. and Mrs. Keith Youngblut of South Porcupine spent the week -end with Mr. and Mrs. Major Youngblut. Several young women of the community gathered last Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Shelley Worsell to plan activities for the coming year with interior decorating, gift wrapping, bowling, etc as the topics. Lunch was served by Mrs. Darlene Empey and Mrs. Shelley Worsell. The next meeting of the Coffee Timers will be a pot and plant demonstration on Monday October 17 at 8 p.m. at the home of Miss Brenda Ball. Any young women that are interested, are invited to attend. Mr. and M'rs. Ed Davies and Mr. and Mrs. Reg Shultz visited last Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Emmerson Hobbs at Talbotville, Mr. and Mrs.. Mi'ttard MacKenzie of St. Thomas were guests on Thanksgiving Day of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Davies. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Collinson of Lucknow were guests last Sunday with their daughter, Mrs. George Collins and Mr. Collins. Thanksgiving guests with Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Anderson were Mr. Thomas irdersrin of North Bay, Mr. ' and Mrs. Henry Ferguson of Champion, Alberta, Mrs. Fern Shackelton of Toronto, Mr. William Anderson of London and Mr. and Mrs. Greg Park of R.R. 3 Auburn. Mrs, Ellan Donaldson of Stratford and Mrs. Elizabeth Hill of Goderich visited last week with Mr. and Mrs. Oliver Anderson. Miss Anne Maclnnes, Mr. Murray Youngblut, Mr. Stewart Youngblut, Mr. Lynn Youngblut and, Miss Betty Youngblut, all of Toronto visited on the week -end with Mr. and Mrs. Major Youngblut. Mrs. Stanley Strasser of Ontario, California is visiting with her father, Mr. William J. Craig for a couple of weeks.
