Hospital Aux l ary plays .vital role every day
Wherever you find
hospitals, you can usually
also find women's hospital
auxiliaries. These auxiliaries
consist of dedicated and
energetic groups of women
who play a vital role because,
no matter how much money
has already been spent, any
doctor will tell you that his
hospital needs more equip-
ment.
The Women's Hospital
Auxiliary at the Goderich
Alexandra Marine and
General Hospital is no ex-
ception. Since 1921 when
membership fees were only
50 cents, the Auxiliary has
held steadfast to its con-
stitution which says the ob-
ject of the Auxiliary shall be
to assist the work of the
hospital in every way possible
and to provide small comforts
for the sick.
Throughout the 1920s and
the 1930s, the Women's
Hospital Auxiliary raised
their money by means of
theatre parties, bridge
parties, Hospital Day teas,
Garden parties, raffles, tag
days and the sale of tickets.
and cook books. In the early
days when the hospital's
needs were very great for
funds, the Women's Auxiliary
raised some $3,615.63 from
1921-23. The object of the
money -making projects was
firstly the hospital needs such
as equipment, supplies and
furnishings. At times the
Auxiliary even assisted the
hospital in paying its electric'
light bill. There was also a
nurses' training school during
these years and the Auxiliary
were ever conscious of the
help they could give the
nurses and staff and they still
managed to set aside a good
sum for the Building Fund.
The second World War
brought about considerable
change to the regular routine
of the Auxiliary. During these
years the Auxiliary had
representation on the
Citizen's War -Time Com-
mittee. They sent gifts to
service men overseas from
Goderich and sent an annual
gift of money to a hospital in
London, England.
In 1942 they worked very
hard on a Hospital Birthday
Tea. This was also the year
that the ladies began to meet
as an organized group once a
week to do the sewing and
mending for the hospital.
During 1943 an understanding
grew between the Board and
the Hospital Auxiliary that
the President of the Auxiliary
would automatically sit on
the Hospital Board.
In 1954 the first murmurs
were heard that the Auxiliary
set up a gift table. However
these were only murmurs and
the idea was set aside. In 1959
once again the idea of having
a gift case at the hospital
entrance was voiced and this
time a committee was formed
to investigate the subject
thoroughly. In the summer of
1959 the case was set up. It
was first stocked with gifts
from members and interc*sred
ladies in town. As it slowly
progressed, a buying com-
mittee was set up and
material for knitting and
sewing were given out to
willing workers. It was a
most interesting experiment,
has come a long way since
those early days and has
proven to be very worthwhile.
In the late fall of 1959 a
donation of two large display
cases for the new gift shop
made the project more at-
tractive. These cases took the
place of the very small,
inadequate cupboard with
which the committee had
started their work. One of the
display cases was placed in
the second floor waiting room
while the other remained in
the hospital lobby.
In 1967 the Auxiliary moved
into their very own gift room.
In 1967 the Gift Cart was introduced as part of the
Women's Hospital Auxiliary's service to the hospital in
Goderich. Its purchase was made possible by a donation
from the duplicate bridge club. The cart visits the wards
on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays taking supplies
of candy, gum, notepaper, magazines and toilet articles
to patients. Here, Frances Worsell (lett), President of
the Auxiliary and Irene White, convenor of the Gift Shop
pose with the cart and also show one of the items of
children's clothing an sale in the Gift Shop. (staff photo)

In January that year a few of
the Auxiliary members
helped to move the stock from
the display cases into the

opened for business the
following Monday. When the
new hospital wing was of-

1967 the Gift Shop was well
