Some of the patterns he has used date back 150 years. A display of his work will be exhibited at the 12th annual Colborne Township Christmas Country Fair in Saltford Valley Hall on October 12 and 15 Wallace pine feature at Fair BY SHARON DIETZ Bob Wallace of Lucknow i> „lfls...• authen,c reproduc- tiions of heavy pine furniture from Early Canadian Designs. Some of the patterns he has used have been T50 years old. He finds his ideas in old hooks and photographs, but says he can reproduce anything as long, as he has a picture or sketch because he is neither an artist or a designer. His work will he on display at the 12th annual 'Colborne Township Christmas Country Fair in the Saltford Valley Hall on October 12 and 15. A commode mirror to set on the top -of a dry sink or lady's dressing table, a candle table and a cedar chest are some of the pieces which will he in- cluded in the display. Bob has also' built a Colonial maple dining room set which con- sists of the heavy pine table and the two benches found in so many early Canadian homes. He experiments with a few blends of stains but prefers to keep the finish as natural as possible. Oak stain and Colonial maple are favorites and an exceptionally at- tractve stain which wa s created hy Nirs. Ken Dunn. Goderich, who m ixed together several stains to get the colour she wanted. Bob's younger brother. Bill works with him in his small shop hy the.. river which runs through his backyard. On sunny days or the Odd day ih`i " fall when it has not been raining, they ,like to work outside. Each piece is worked and finished by hand so .that they can honestly say their work is hind built. They use super - select pine which has no knots which will fly apart in the lathe leaving the piece good only for a wood stove or fireplace. A local cabinet maker, Bill Nelson, has a lathe reproducer allowing him creativity with his work and enabling him to reproduce the authentic detail he has found in some of the old patterns. Bill is a native of Lucknow and does excellent work. The furniture is built heavy because Bo_b likes to know that there is enough wood •there to blast off and refinish the piece for the owner if it has been knocked or marked during everyday use. • It takes about a half hour to make one spindle leg for a candle table and the piece of pine which was used for the top of a cedar chest, costs about $20. Bob and Bill take time and care with the work even in the minor details. For example, all the drawer joints are dove- tailed. Rnh used to build houses before an accident required him to wear a cast on his leg for most" of last winter. He ' tita'ted tiLTiIdinf -furrrrture---`-- around- C-hris-tura, Lind. the hobby..which helped to pass the time while he was Laid up has become a full time profession. "We could say that we build this style of furniture because we want to preserve Canada's heritage," says Bob, "but really, working for a living can he nonsense if you do not like what you are doing and we spend a lot of hours at this, but it isn't work to us." Bill became interested in carpentry when he worked with a carpenter for part of last summer and he just found himself spending more time with Bob in his shop and has been working with his brother now for a month and a half. Bob has another assistant in his shop, a fouryear-old neighbor boy. Da' id blows in now and then to check the work in progress. "We don't glue anything around here anymore, we 'gree' it," laughs Bob, "and we don't plug or clamp anything, we `prug' and 'cramp' it." When people ask Bob why he builds furniture, he an- swers smugly, "I wanted to teach my kid brother how to grue and prug." Bill Wallace has been working with his brother, Bob building furniture and on sunny days or the odd day this fall when it has not been raining, he likes to work outside in the backyard. The brothers build heavy pine furniture from Early Canadian designs found in old books and photographs. Give thanks this, Thanksgivin CLOSED THANKSGIVING DAY Monday October 10th!
