Ken Daer thrives on
pressure.
The McGees Pontiacs
pitcher came on in relief to
stone Ziebart" bats in fifth
inning with the bases loaded
and then knocked in two runs
with a seventh inning double
as McGees won the Industrial
League Softball cham-
pionship with a 6 - 5 victory
over Ziebart last Thursday.
The win was the third for
McGees in the best - of - five
series after they took the
opening games 3 - 0 and 4 1.
Ziebart fought back with four
runs in their final at bat to
stave off elimination, winning
the third -game 6 - 4.
Daer played less than three
innings in the final game but
his presence was the dif-
ference in the McGees win.
Rick Sowerby started the
game on the mound for
McGees. and pitched strong
for four innings giving up only
five hits. One of those hits was
a two -run homer by Rick
Duckworth in the fourth in-
ning that narrowed the
McGee lead to 3 - 2 after four
innings of play.
But he ran into trouble in
the fifth inning, after his
team-mates had produced a
run in their top half of the
fifth to increase the McGee
lead to two runs. In the bot-
tom of the fifth inning Dan.

homer over the right field
fence, the second of the game
off Sowerby.
Then after a series of
errors, singles and force
plays, Sowerby was lifted by
coach Gord Walters in favor
of Dger. With one out he got
Simon Langlois to hit into a
force play and was ap-

Volland 3 - 0 and then smoked
three straight pitches by him
to get out of the inning with
the teams tied at four runs
apiece.

produce a tie. -breaking run in
the sixth inning but McGees
enjoyed an excellent op-
portunity as Rick Sowerby
and Wayne Doak reached
third and second base
respectively but with two out
Paul Kelly bounced out to
Langlois,
Ron Sowerby got things
started for McGee in the top
of the seventh with a lead-off
single through the box. He
was then forced at second on
.Ken Vanderburgh's ground
ball to first baseman Don
Parker and Langlois fanned
Doug Spitzig for the second
out.
After a tough duel with
John Phillips, Langlois
finally walked him putting
men on first and second with
two out. Daer then promptly
smacked the first Langlois
pitch to deep right centre
field for a triple that scored
Vanderhurgh and Phillips to
give McGees a two -run lead.
Daer then got Ziebart lead-
off hatter Ron Corriveau to
bounce back to the mound
