could gather that from what Darcy said at the
meeting in Wingham."
"The mayor has a right to say whatever he
wants to," said Gower, "but in my view, it was
a little irresponsilile."
Councillor Elsa Haydon also said the mayor's
over -reaction to the McKeough meeting was
"irresponsible and shocking".
"It takes nine people to set the budget, not
one," said Councillor Ilaydon. "If we all act
sensibly, and I for one intend to act sensibly.
there shouldn't be any increase in taxes."
Councillor Hay don reminded voters the town is
getting "more, not less" this year from gover-
nment in the way of grants.
"It may not be the size of increase we had
hoped for, but it is an increase," said Haydon.
MAYOR REALISTIC
But Deputy -reeve Eileen Palmer said she did
not think the mayor "was pushing the panic
button".
"I think he was realistic,said Palmer. "I
think we're going to have cut the frills, trim
the corners and stick to necessities."
Councillor John Doherty wasn't at the meeting
in Wingham, so he didn't know on what Mayor
Shewfelt was basing his comments.
"Certainly I'm looking forward to paying
higher taxes " said Doherty. "1 think it is time
all hoards and committees started to make slices
in their spending. I think we have to take a good
look and put programs in their proper per-
spective and priorities."
Councillor I)on Wheeler said that as a member
of the finance committee he plans to "take a
positive approach and try to work toward no
increase in taxes". He said he didn't feel from
what Darcy McKeough said at the Wingham
meeting, that there would need to be a "shocking
increase" in taxes in Goderich.
"We'll have to live within our means," said
Wheeler

suggested placing an illuminated sign on High-

Squires backed up the idea of having a full-
time working manager at the airport. He said a
person was needed full-time for snow removal, to
handle fuel and to maintain a check on the
runway lights.

C.C. Parker and Associates, London, in-
formed the Goderich Recreation and Community
Centre Board that rusting trusses in the arena
were the responsibility of the board.
C.C. Parker, Ole engineering firm hired for the
arena reconstruction project, met with members
of the building committee earlier this month and
claimed that due to specifications agreed upon in
the planning stages of the arena, responsibility
for the rusting trusses above the ice surface
would lie with the board.
Assistant arena manager Chuck Jewell told
members that new trusses above the ice portion
of the arena have begun to rust and would have
to be repainted before the ice is put in this season
unless fans were installed to control con-
densation.
The board decided to check with C.C. Parker
on the original steel specifications sent by the
firm to London steel, to determine what was
agreed upon in the planning stages. They will
also ask that minutes of those meetings be for -
