HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1977-09-29, Page 16PAGE 16--GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 29, 1977 Attendance down from last year about 1,000 attend Dungannon Fair A crowd of about a thousand attended the Dungannon Fall Fair ,- ein Thursday night, September 23 and Friday, September 24. This was down somewhat from last year, however there were one hundred exhibitors this year. On Thursday evening 29 4 horses and their riders put on an English. and Western saddle horse show and Western games. The hall was open. to the public to view the exhibits and the midway was open. Friday's events began with a parade down from main street to the Fairgrounds, in which Brookside and Kingsbridge schools took part. ,Master of Ceremonies was Ron Alton of Lucknow and Warden Doug McNeil declared the fair officially open. Kingsbridge School won the trophy for their float in the parade. There was a heavy horse show which included five teams. The Dungannon Beef and Dairy Calf Club which includes some 30 members put their animals through their paces. A new.4-H Horse Club, the North Huron Trailblazers, comprising 30 riders, held their Achievement Day at the Fair. A good showing of pets ap- peared in the Pet Show. even though one of the winged pets escaped to the roof of the hall. Overall Lady Champion was Mrs. Russell Brindley with 60 points, In the Log Sawing Contest there were three divisions. W inners in the men's contest were: Bob Gilchrist and Bob Struthers of Lucknow; in the ladies contest winners were: Mrs. Nancy Stapleton.. and lvlrs. Marybelle Cranston; ita the mixed contest winners were: Donald Curran and Mrs. Marybelle Cranston. There were 17 entries in the Baby Contest in Which the following were winners: up to six months, first, April Noreen Gross, daughter. of Bernice and Gordon Gross, Auburn: second, Tenille Cranston, daughter of Marybelle and Cecil Cran-- ston: third, Kimberley «Nilson, daughter of Eileen and Dan Wilson, R.R.3 Goderich; fourth, Jason Brindley, son of Joanne and Ted Brindley. In the:- class of babies from six months to one year winners were: first, Juliet Redmond, daughter of Judy and Jim Redmond; second,. Robert Ohm, son of Bev and Ken Ohm; third,. Jenni Sue Brown, daughter of Sue and Doug Brown.: fourth, Melissa Kerr, daughter of Annette and Gerald Kerr. Bernie Burgsma von the speed hike race second, Aiex Travis. and third, Dale MacInnes. Jim Wright won the standard bicycle race in which one of the youngest competitors was five year old • Johnny Wright who made it all the way around the track. In the ball game on Friday evening the Kingsbridge team defeated the All Stars, A good crowd enjoyed the music of the Country Com- panions at the dance, so much so that they passed a hat around to raise enough to keep the orchestra playing an extra hour. CHURCH. NE WS Guest minister for the 122nd Anniversary o% Dungannon United Church Dungannon doings Mary Bere, correspondent, 529-7915 was Rev. Harley Moore of Grand Bend who spoke an the subject, ''Strength for Today", The soloist was Mrs. • Jack Culbert who sang, "He", and "In the, Garden" , very beautifully. The choir contributed two anthems, "Give me Peace in my Soul" andd`'Jacoh s \'ision�;. A cordial wel( e- was extended to friends of the congregation and former memh ers• who had returned for the occasion. There was a ,good representation from the Nile Church which had cancelled its service for the day. Flowers were placed in the church in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Herb Alton by their granddaughter Mrs. Ettabeile Bradley of Goderich. History records' that when the cornerstone of the Dungannon (then Methodist) church was laid, the ceremonies were conducted in a brief "break" in the heavy rain of the day, July 2, 1909; also that on the day of the opening, December 19, 1909, those.who attended had to contend with bad roads and stormy weather. In respect to weather, times do not seem to have changed: Persons wishing an Observer subscription under our congregation's` Every Family Plan are asked to put $2.50 or a donation in the special envelope distributed in the mail. Mrs, Bessie McNee is the Observer reprer entative. Explorers are under the leadership of Mrs. Donna- Snyder and will hold their first meeting of the new season on Tuesday evening of this week at the church. Choir practice will be held the -church. The Sacrament of Holy Communion will be held on Worldwide Communion Simday, October 2, at 'Nile and Dungannon, • A baptismal Sunday is under consideration for the Dungannon church in the not too distant future, Interested persons are asked to contact the minister (529-7936). Nile United Church Anniversary service will be held on Sunday, October 16. Huron -Perth Presbytery meets at Walton on Tdesday, September 27. There is a mission Festival for Presbytery meeting at Walton on Tuesday. Sep- tember 27. There is a Mission Festival for Presbytery at Mitchell on October 1. High school age young people intersted in forming a Hi -C group for this charge please contact the minister. The M,,Y.F. of the Christian Fellowship Church in Dungannon held their first meeting of the fall season on Friday evening. It was a special social evening to welcome all the new mem- bers. The evening --was spent bowling followed by games and refreshments at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Murray Martin. The Sunday morning service was taken by Pastor Lawrence whose message was from Peter 1:13-25, the theme being the power of the Word of God, which is quick and sharp as a two-edged sword. To have this power we must read, know and obey the Word of God which liveth and abideth forever.
