Juniors win first game of season by TD The GDCI junior Vikings won the first game of their Huron -Perth Conference football schedule last Thursday in Stratford, defeating the Northwestern Huskies, 15-12. The junior Vikings led 14-0 at halftime, but the Huskies came on strong in the final half to make the game close. Stuart Crew, running out of the tail -back slot for the Vikings, showed good speed to the outside and determined ,running in getting the first GDCI touchdown in the second quarter. The touch- down went unconverted when the kick was blocked. Crew set up the opportunity for the second Viking touch- down when he intercepted an errant Huskie pass on the next series of downs. The Vikings put together an of- fensive drive completed 'by half -back Mike Hodges one yard touchdown run on a reverse. The Vikings added a two-point convert On a pass from quarterback Dan Maillet to John O'Keefe. O'Keefe was lost to the Vikings later in the game when he suffered a broken ankle. In the third quarter, Stratford controlled the game offensively and scored their ti'rs't, touchdown on a pass to end Bill Hanes in the end zone. The convert attempt was unsuccessful. The Huskies pulled to within three points of the Vikings late in the fourth quarter when Al Rivers blocked a Viking punt and fell on it in the Goderich end zone for a touchdown, Their at- tempt to run in a two point conversion failed, leaving the Vikings with their three point margin of victory. '1 he Viking offence was highlighted by ' the strong running of Crew and Maillet's ball . handling and running. The Viking attack totalled 220 yards rushing but only 10 yards passing, an area that coaches Bill Garrow and Bruce Baker hope to improve on here Thursday against Norwell. Defensively, the Vikings were_ ,able to contain the Huskies for most of the game, but coach Garrow wants an improved performance in tackling and pursuit by his defensive unit. The Huskies' offence matched the Vikings output, with 220 yards, but were hurt by penalties and the key pass interception by Crew. Today's game with Norwell begins at 1:30 p.m. at the GDCI campus, and is part of a junior senior double- header. Seniors field strong Huron contender by TD The GDCI Vikings served notice on the rest of the Huron Perth conference senior football teams that they will be a force to be dealt with this season in their season - opening game in Stratford last Thursday. The 43-0 licking the Vikings pasted on the Northwestern "-1=fisCCie-s was by far the most im- pressive offensive display of the. games played around the conference. The Vikings gave a sound two-way performance in shutting out the Huskies. Speedy deep receiver Dave Mackenzie struck for three touchdowns, two of them on pass and run plays of over 30 yardseach, on passes from quarterback Bill Walters, the other an a six yard pass from Dennis Donnelly. Mark Frayne scored two Viking touchdowns, both on reverse plays, which went -for 24 and 40 yards. The other Viking touchdown came from first year senior Randy Little on a four yard dive play. Little rushed for a total of 114 yards in the game. Eric Mitchell kicked three ....onu r -is ----for — -the Vikings. Other Vikings points came from a two-point safety touch credited to Ben Worsen and a two-point conversion pass from Walters to Donnelly. The offensive line provided' ■ good running room for , the Viking backs with solid blocking throughout the game. Defensively, the Vikings showed a greatly improved effort against the. inside running attack, and their gang -tackling stopped Northwestern's offence cold. 'Viking Coaches Ray Donnelly and Al Drennan are looking for a tougher game here today in their home opener against Norwell.
