The Mustangs, under new coach Dan Colquhaun, had little trouble controlling the game as they outshot their oppo.nents 44-17. Although the Stangs had only five players from last year's team dressed, in- cluding goaltender Jurgen Hellman, the new crop of rookies looked pretty aggressive. Clintons big line for the game consisted of Peter Thompson centering Billy Smith and Larry Madge. Thompson'notched a pair of goals and an assist, while Madge fired a, single and received two assists, Smith had a pair of assists also. The other Clinton goal carne from the stick of Steve Daveys. Clinton led the game after one period by, a score ,of 2-1 and then led 3-1 after the second period. -.:- Clinton's next exhibition game will he- played this Friday night at 8:30 p.m. in Mitchell against the same Seaforth team and some of the other Mustangs are ex- pected to see some action. Then on Sunday afternoon, also in Mitchell, the Mustangs will take -on the Mitchell Hawks. The Mustangs season opener will be played in Kincardine on Friday, Oct. 7 and then on Oct. 14th the Stangs will host last year's defending Champions, Listowel Cyclones. Former Clinton Mustang and Central Jr. "C" leading scorer Robert 1-leard will be missed this year as Rob is now playing for Petrolia Jets of the Western Jr. "B" league. Midgetgirls drop opener in WOAA chainpiOflship The Goderich Tiger Dunlop midget girls' softball team trail Harriston by ode game in the WOAA championship after dropping a 3-0 decision in the first game of the best - 0f -five series played at Agriculture Park Tuesday.' The second game of the series will be played in Harriston tonight and the third game is scheduled for Agriculture Park Sunday. W inning pitcher Tracey Williamson broke open a scoreless game by slamming a three -run homer in the top of the seventh inning to centrefield. The blast scored teammates Julie Arthers and Kim Wick who had reached base with a single and walk respectively. The game was a pitching duel between Williamson and Goderich pitcher Denise Mitchelmore. Each pitcher was touched for three hits but Mitchelmore issued four walks and Williamson two. Both teams had their 'chances to score early in the game, capitalizing on errors, but- solid defensive plays snuffed potential rallies. Karen Melady of Goderich was thrown out at the plate after attempting to score on a two -out single by Anne Marie Murphy in the third. Sandra Rowe led the Goderich offence with two hits in three trips to the plate including a triple in the fourth inning. She reached third base twice in the game hut was left stranded on both occasions. Three players had one hit apiece for Harriston. The Tiger Dunlops won their division title a week earlier sweeping St. Marys in a best -of -three playoff series. They edged St. Marys 5-1 in the first game in St. Marys and then clinched the championship with an 11-7 win in Goderich. The girls put together a better than .500 season in league play this year winning nine games against eight losses and one tie. But the team put it together in the playoffs disposing of Mitchell in two straight games in the first round by scores of 7-3 and 8-1 and then advanced to final by knocking off Kirkton in similar fashion by scores of 7-5 and 9-5. Goderich took an early lead in the first game of the series against St. Marys scoring two runs in the first inning. Joni Thompson led off the inning with a single and scored on Rowe's triple. Murphy then delivered a key two -out single to score Rowe. Goderich added a single run in the sixth as Thompson tri fled and scored on a sa rifice and they'addedtwo insurance runs in the seventh inning. St. Marys scored their only run in the sixth inning on an error.
