In August, Signal -Star began mailing three of its own publications under the new system. The Goderich Signal -Star, the Mitchell Advocate and The Kincardine News now have the clear, stick -on labels from the new mailing machine, a real improvement over the previous addressing systems which sometimes left post- men wondering who really was to get the copy. The transition has been "one monstrous un- dertaking" during the initial period according to Buchanan. "And it is likely to get worse before it gets better," he adds. COSTLY EQUIPMENT -- First of all came a Pitney - Bowes metal plate embosser and a new employee Mrs. Joanna Crabb. Mrs. Crabb was charged with the responsibility to prepare an embossed plate for each subscriber in Kincardine, Mitchell and Goderich and to make any changes as they occur - such as a new address, a new subscriber, a new expiry date. Next arrived a Pitney - Bowes 7062 addresser printer and a Pitney -Bowes pin feeder to transfer the in- formation on the embossed metal plates to a print-out sheet which is eventually put through the labelling mach ine. iterature convener speaks regular meeting of the U.C.W. was held Sep- er 8 at the home of Mrs. tledge. s. A lovely lunch was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Rutledge and Mrs. Pentland assisted by Miss Jean' Rutledge. A meeting of the board of stewards was -held Thurs., Sept. 8. Plans were finalized for the auction sale on Sep- tember 24 at the Nile Church. The Kirk -Rudy labelling machine with the ability to label in excess of 10,000 pieces for thetmail per hour, takes both the print—out sheets prepared in Goderich and the- compuierized mailing list for the Anglican Church papers which is supplied by Alphatext, a computer firm in Ottawa. And,. finally, there is a Samuel poly -strapping machine which bundles the papers with poly -straps for mailing purposes. As well, an increased staff - sometimes as many as 12 persons at one time - are required to operate the labelling machine, bundle the papers, stuff them into mailbags and load them onto skids ready for the trucks. A mailing crew is required for about 10 days each month, 11 months out of 12, About 7,000 mail bags are filled each month with the Anglican newspapers. The Post Office picks up the bags at the Signal -Star plant and transports them to London for despatch. Two truck loads of mail hags per eight-hour shift - about 16 skids - leave the Signal -Star office each day. FUTURE LOOKS BUSY The new equipment and the new _enlarged staff, which is presently learning to,operate the machinery will probably get busier as the demand for such a mailing service grows. Buchanan says Signal -Star Publishing Company Ltd: will eventually be able to offer mailing services to all the weeklies published at the Goderich plant. These include e 22 newspapers from Bruce, Huron, Middlesex, Perth, Grey and Wellington coun- ties. As well, any company or,.•. organization wanting to do a complete householder mailing in the province or in the country, 'will be able to arrange for the service right here in Goderich at SSP. "It opens a completely new avenue for Signal-Sta-r Publishing Company Ltd.," Buchanan points out. "There's really no limit to the possibilities such a facility could have." But right now the main thing is' to get the bugs worked 'out of the present workload...and tame the monster created for SSP mailing room staff. t.
