It had been suggested that Ciclerfest be held this year at the Community Centre, but it was felt moving it from the House would result in a loss of "atmosphere". Dorothy Williams, chair- man of the event, said that she had spoken to a number of people and they all felt that having Ciderfest at the arena would definitely "Lose something". Based on the great success of last year's Ciderfest, it was decided that much of the cider would have to be prepared in advance. Terrence Hussey said last year we were 20 or 30 gallons behind the demands - always, when there was no reserve supply, and there was 'only one press working. There will still .be the cider CODE RIC(-) SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY;' erfest press at the Festival to demQQstrate _the m.akin.g-,of the beverage, but cider will be ready ahead of time too. Last year, .one press made about 300 gallons during the day,.' It was decided this year that there will be a Country Market stall selling fresh produce, homemade jams and jellies, candles, etc. Mrs. Grace Hussey is organizing the booth. Mrs. Williams said a campaign would have to be mounted to see if "we couldn't scare up some apples and vegetables from around here" and asked people to call her if they have windfall apples available. Canned goods are fine too, for the Country Store. Lots of people buy a couple of cans of stuff - they eat one, and nobody'll, touch the second. We could use it, if it's not going to be used otherwise," she said, Besides the Country market, there will also be the Pornography is like a cancer by Richard Shaw "Pornography is like a cancer and we've got to start somewhere to stamp it out," These were chairman Mickey Vere's words at Monday night's meeting of the Huron -Perth County Roman Catholic Separate School Board, Vere was referring to a letter, which was'sent to all the boards of education in the country, from the Periodical Distributors of Canada. The letter suggests that the issue or availability of pornographic material to children should be left in the hands of the courts and that the boards should3not interfere. Director of Education, Bill Eckert said that the letter is a public relations document that is full of contradictions and accusations. The availability of pornography is an issue which has raised much discussion at recent O,S.T.C. meetings. The Huron -Perth Separate School board also received a mentgrarndum from the executive director of the Ontario School Trustee's Council concerning pornography. The memorandum says that "As educators we must be concerned at the pouring of millions of dollars into publications for marketing, which give a distorted impression of social acceptability and normalcy of sexual deviation" and the availability of these publications to children. Trustee Arthur Haid 'said "It`s not only magazines and written material, but movies and television also go uncensored and are available to children," Haid went on -to say, "There's nothing that takes a hold of a child's mind like that TV set." Chairman Vere suggested that trustees write their local aldermen,, members of the legislature, and member of parliament. "If they get enough letters they'll have to take action on the issue or we won't put them back in," According to ,Vere, letters from,,,prganizations which contain a list of names don't hold any punch anymore. "We must write thepoliticians individually expressing our concerns on the subject." The matter was referred to the next meeting of the board to allow the trustees to consider the issue and be ready to decide what, is to be done. One suggestion, to form a special committee -to deal with the issue, was forwarded to the Sep- tember 26 meeting of board. Revised report...... • from page I tatted the downtown merchants to determine if their organization had any opinion on the possible lifting of the parking restrictions,' "If Doherty wanted feedback, all he had to do was ask," commented Chisholm. Chisholm is excited about the plans for downtown becauspwof the establishment of the Business Improvement Area. He said better than 50 paved parking spaces will be available behind the Craigie building on Lighthouse Street shortly, and said more improvements are planned for the near future. John Schaefer, another downtown merchant, is closely involved with the Business Improvement Area and is also hopeful that the core area will become more attractive and more convenient for shoppers once the BIA gets off the ground. Schaefer agreed with Chisholm that Chairman Doherty should have been in touch with the downtown businessmen before putting forth a notice of motion concerning the possibility of lifting the two-hour parking restrictions, even for a trial period. Schaefer said it appeared the traffic com- mittee' would put the responsibility on the business people to see that:persons working downtown did not park all day in the business district during business hours. He said there would be no way for the business men to ac- complish this and felt that the town bylaw restricting parking for a two-hour time limit was the best solution to date. There was no indication at Monday's council meeting whether Doherty would seek a seconder for his motion concerning the parking restric- tions, or not. The notice of motion read: "That consideration be given to lift all Time Restricted Parking on The Square and the adjacent streets (core area) for a three month period and the onus for parking be put on the businessmen - women". ever popular sausage burgers or "Big Van's" that went ever so well last year. Farmer's sausage will also be made fresh that day, as it has been - for the last two years. ]''here will be demon- strati(.ms of honey extraction, butter churning, rug making and violin making. The Committee is trying to arrange displays of antique quilts, Egrnondville pottery and demonstrations of shinning and shingle cutting. Last year, Glen McNichol's shingle mill and the steam engine that powered it, drew] large crowds. It watt Suggested that the shingles produced could be branded with a distinctive Van Egmond House brand, and sold as souvenirs, Attendance last year at Ciderfest topped the 3,000 _ mark and the weather then was bitterly cold and probably kept a lot of people away, said. Gladys Van Egmond, the Chairman of the Foundation's Ways and Means C..om mittee, watt any luck at all, we should be able to double `that." Proceeds will go to restore the Van Egmond house.
