One of the responsibilities Jim McLarty has as the Gearco metallurgical engineer is to
check the microscopic structure of the steel in the gears after they are heat treated in the
firm's huge furnaces. The steel is checked to make sure that the heat process did not
weaken the core of the gear and that is done by magnifying the core material as much as
