' j PAGE 2A—GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 8, 1977 !ather, son team write Port Albert news BY JOANNE WALTERS A father and son team are the Pact • Albert news correspondents for the Goderich Signal -Star. John Tigert, 13, likes to walk •or bike around his little corn- munity to find out what's new and his father Bill helps him put his news discoveries into words for the paper. Both father and son agree, however, that it's difficult to find . news sometimes. Mr. Tigert says he has to "plague" people and ask them time after time to phone him or his son if they have news to report. But people just can't seem to be bothered and Mr. Tigert says he certainly doesn't have time to sit on the phone all day to find out what is happening. He and his whole family, including his six children, are busy running River Side Park, one of two parks for camping in Port Albert. This summer has been busy at the park and the Tigert family is kept active looking after maintenance and preparing new camp sites. The park is also busy in the fall and winter seasons when people come to fish in Nine .Mile River which runs through the park or to snowshoe, go snowmobiling or hiking. Mr. Tigert has lived in Port Albert for 40 years but his ancestors were some of the earliest settlers there and he is very interested in the history of the village. He has early maps, deeds and documents handed down by generations Of his relatives. They contain a wealth of historical information. He says he would like to -devote all of his time to studying the history of Port Albert and would some day like to put a book of pictures together t tell the story of the old flour - mill which used to be located there. He recently assisted Bob Steele, a University of Guelph student working for the Ministry . of National Resources, to put together a history of Port Albert. Like Benmiller, Port Albert, was once a self- contained little village. It was surveyed in 1837 although the first settlers did not come to Port Albert, then called just Albert, until 1842. The settlers came up the Maitland River by boat from Goderich. They found that it was exactly nine miles -from the mouth of the Maitland to Port Albert. and thus they named the river at Port Albert Nine Mile River. John Hawkins, Mr. Tigert's grandmother's grandfather was one of the original set- tlers in Port Albert and one of the men who helped to start the flour mill operation in the village. Mr. Tigert has the Hawkins lamily traced back to the yr 1756. The family was originally from Ireland. Mr. Tigert would like to visit that country some day but doesn't Tike the idea of all the religiouslighting hap- pening them. William' Hawkins another° of Mr. Bill Tigert of Port Albert looks at an old copy of the Compass News, a newspaper put out by men at the Royal Canadian Air Force base located at Goderich airport between the years of 1941 and 1945. There were about 2,000 men at the base training to be navigators. Mr. Tiger+ who helps his son John write the Port Albert news for the Goderich Signal -Star is very interested in history and is pleased to have in his possession this first edition of Compass News.
