Goderich dropped the first two games of the series but did salvage some winnings for the year. (staff photo) Pontiacs grab Gords series McGee Pontiacs dropped Gord's Sports 9-1 and 5-3 in their best of three set and the Pontiacs now win a berth in the Dunrop division cham- pionship against Little Bowl. The Pontiacs rallied behind a five hit performance by Ken Daer in the first game of the series and drubbed the Sports 9-1. They hammered four home runs in the game, two by Ken Vanderburg and one each by Daer and Paul Kelly. The first inning proved to be enough for McGee when they struck four times,'Kelly, who went three for four on the 'night, singled to start things off. Rick Sowerby singled to move him to third and Daer sacrificed to left field to score him. Ron Sowerby waited out. a walk and Vanderburg stepped into his first shot to make it 4-0. Dave Mckenzie ' managed the lonc;„Sport's run in Alik third when he singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Phil Petrie. Ken Vanderburg got that run back in the bottom of the inning when he ham- mer -ed his second shot out of the park after Daer beat out an error to get on base. John Phillips got a base on errors to start the fourth and Kelly and Daer each got round trippers to end the game's scoring. Des .Cour- tney started the game for Gord's and gave up seven hits and all the runs. Petrie came on in the fourth and was touched for one hit in two innings. The Pontiacs put a three run rally together in the fifth and held off a late Sports' charge to grab the series. Ken Vanderburg scored first for the Pontiacs in the second inning when he drew a walk, stole second and came in on Daer's single. Ron Sowerby made it 2-0 with a solo homer in the fourth and a- thre•e—rin'"burst in -the fifth sealed the win. Ken Meriam started the inning with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. Buck Million singled on a fielder's choice and stole second and Paul Kelly singled two runs over. Doug Spitzig moved Kelly to second with a saeti'fr e' fly and Rick Sowerby set to third with a sacrific aid -he, scored on a wild pitcb. The Sports _ did all their scoring in the sixth. Jon Ginn singled to start things off but— was grabbed on Warren Watt's fielder's choice: Dennis Williamson drew a walk and Bob Riehl slashed a triple to score Watt and Williamson. Riehl scored but Daer got Chip Wilson to ground out to end the rally. Victimized by some shoddy fielding by his team-mates, Maillet gave up nine runs on 10 hits in the four innings he.worked, Larry Madgecame on in relief and was effective, giving up only one rain on five_ hits over the last five innings.
