Dear Editor,
As a result of accounts in
the dailypapers, people have
been asking me if I approve
the killing of severely
retarded' infants. No,.I do not
approve. And neither does the
Interim report of the
Anglican Church's. Task
Force on Human Life,_•
The report: "Dyin-
e Passage from Life to
Death begins with this
statement:
"It is becoming com-
monplace to hear the remark
that people are more afraid of
the process of dying than of
death itself. The request one
hears from many people is to
be allowed to die with dignity.
Unfortunately there are
many factors preventing this
from taking place."
Briefly, we have very often
the scientific and medical
ability to postpone death, or
to maintain at least some
signs of life. The question is
whether we should always
insist, even against the
patient's wishes, on using
every means at our disposal
to keep the body technically
"alive".
There is no question of the
value of life.hristianity is
the most li e -affirming of
religions. Nor is there any
doubt that means of
prolonging life are greatly to
our advantage. The question
is whether they are always
more humane and in our best
interest, and if not, under
what circumstances.
Some years ago I met a
surgeon in the corridor of a
large hospital. He told me
that an elderly'wo_man was
