Randy Middel of Goderich pulls on the sail of his windsurfer
craft and tries to keep his balance at the same time. The
$795 craft is a surfboard with a sail on it able to rotate a full
360 degrees. It is a recognized sailing vessel and there are
more than 45,000 of them around the woxid. More than 500
enthusiasts hav'e learned to keep their balance on the boats.
For beginners this is like standing on a bobbing cork. If the
beginner falls, the craft won't float away because its sail
acts as a sea anchor. (staff photo)
Neil MacTavish gets set to swing the sail of his windsurfer craft towards him so he can
grab onto the "wishbone" - the oval ring encircling the sail for steering. Windsurfing is
one of the newest and fastest growing sports today. It involves both sailing and acrobatic
skills. From July 30 to August 6, 250 competitors took part in the North American Wind-
surfing Championships in Collingwood. (staff photo)
