Smith said he felt he had
"caught on" to the metric
system and claimed that -
when someone use d

found himself converting to
Celsius. He said he felt there
would be problem using
kilometres rather than miles
adding that the children
would be taught the kilometre

The hardware trade may

money to convert to metric
according to Phil Main,
operator of a ithrdware store.
He ,said he felt the crunch
would come in nuts and bolts

prevailed. Ile said the change
would require him to stock

metric people are not to
compare conventional
weights and measures. The
idea is that when someone
says I'm 6 foot two inches you
know he's 1.9 metres tall.
That isn't the case however
and most people try to
compare a metric Measure to
what they know and the
cenfusion begins. Advertising
agencies had a hayday with
metric convertors with a
firm's name printed on it and
people are to use the handy
pocket size convertors to
master the metric system.

office estimating the costs to
be between $10,000 and
$20,000. He said the company
would probably have to hire
half a dozen extra people to
convert to metric and to
change lumber price books
and have the new books
printed. He assumed he
would still be selling lumber
by the piece and for the same
price but didn't know what
the measure would be on that
piece.

a course that had done away
with the yard and was
measured in metres alone. He
said 18 holes at the Maitland

season will be 5,367 metres.
The Sunset Golf Course also
has no firm plans now to
switch to metric and a
spokesman for the course
said she didn't know what the
course would be , under the
new system. The 18 hole
course is 5,320 yards which
will be 4,862 metres.

and medications were

that they always had been,. He
said the biggest change was
made in heights and weights
of people and in the use of the

decline
Declining corn prices have
created much interest by
Huron County farmers in
corn stabilization plans, says,
Mike Miller, associate ag.
rep. for the county.
For the 1976 crop, the
Federal support price is $2.18
per bushel. This covers all
corn sold between September
1, 1976 and August 31, 1977. It
does NOT guarantee a
producer $2.18 lor his corn,
but is based on the average
price for the year (September
to August), which currently is
close to $2.18. To date there is
a possibility of a small
payment - 6-10 cent to 1 cent
per bushel, which would be
available on any sale of corn,
whether sold at $2.30 or $1.80.
The final price and payment
(if any) will be announced in
October and producers would
have to submit sales invoices
along with the application.
Maximum limitations have
not been announced to date.
For the 1977 crop the
year- average - this will be
above the $2.18 of the 1976
crop - but how much is not
clear and it will not be an-
nounced until well into 1978. It
could be $2.25 - $2.30 range
and in most other aspects
would function like the 1976
Support price, with payment
to be made in late fall of 1978.
For 1977 Crop there are
tentative plans for an Ontario
Corn Stabilization Program.
This program would 1)
Require Enrolment forms ;
have a fee of 3-4 cents per
bushel (payment of fee
deferred until plan pays out);
add approximately 10 - 11
cents per bushel to the 1977
Federal 'Support Level; have
the same Sept. 1, 1977 to
August 31, 1978 date; Have a
maximum payment of 30,000
bUshels per man.
Producers are urged to
watch for two further an-
nouncements in September
and October.
-The first - enrolment forms
and deadline for the Ontario
Corn Stabilization Program
for their 1977 Corn Crop.
The second the possibility
of application forms for 1976
