"And when Paul had come
to Jerusalem, he attemr5ted to
join the disciples; but they
were all afraid of him, for
they did not believe that he
was a disciple. But Barnabas
took him, and brought him to
the apostles, and declared to
them how he had seen the
Lord on the road, who spoke
to him, and how at Damascus
he had preached .boldly in the
name of Jesus. — Acts
9:26,27
Paul was the loneliest and
most friendless " man in
Jerusalem. It had not been a
great while since his con-
version. "Breathing out
threatenings and slaughter
against the disciples", he had
started for Damascus to
arrest any Christians he
might find there and bring
them, bound, to Jerusalem.
But on the way Paul had a
life -changing experience:
Jesus appeared to him, and
the Lord's grace shone in his
heart.
One's conversion works

the glory of the Lord. He did
not come back, as he had
expected, dragging the' saints
to trial. He returned to
Jerusalem with 'a changed
heart, eager to join the very
disciples whom he had per-
secuted so relentlessly,
having now the purpose of
being their brother in Christ.
But it is exceedingly hard to
live down a bad reputation,
and it was understandable
that no one believed in Paul's
account of the change which
had taken place in his life.
The Church was not ready to
give him a right hand of
fellowship. "They were all
afraid of him," Luke says. It
was natural that they should
be, when one considers what
they had suffered at his hand:
Then, too, his former
associates would have•
nothing to do with him, since
he had suddenly broken
covenant, with -them. -If- ever
Paulneeded a friend, it was
then - someone who believed
in him and who was ready to
take his part before the
suspiciods Christians and to
help him into their ,con-
fidence. •

was found in Barnabas. Therf'
