Jo Manning is one of
several artists involved with
the art show at the Blyth
Summer Festival. Most of the
artists are professionals, and
Ron and Bev (Katzin)
Walker, along with Jo
Manning are concerned with
the lack of visual art in the
area and propose to do
something about it. To this
,end they have been funded by
the Ontario Arts Council.
The art show this summer
is set tit` on movable flats in
the basement of Blyth
Memorial Hall. A more
permanent location is hoped
for in the future. Most of the
works exhibited in the show
are by artists who live in the
area full or part-time and who
derive their inspiration' from
the eountryside.
Ron and Bev Walker are
permanent residents in Blyth
and are most interested in the
art show. Mr. Walker is the
head of the Art Department of
Central Huron Secondary
School in Clinton. His
drawings are on display in the
basement of Memorial Hall
this summer and his "'In
pursuit of the three legged
fox" has been described as
intriguing. Bev Walker is said
to exhibit a gentle subdued
landscape in mixed media.
Jo Manning is a part-time
resident of Blyth and
maintains close contact with
the area. She can also act as a
liaison for the show with
Toronto where she lives in the
winter. The etchings from her
recent show at the Gallery
Pascal in Toronto now shown
in the Blyth art show are
based on the meadows,
fenceposts and . woodlots on
the road past Ball's Bridge.
Mona Mulhern of Goderich
is represented in the show
with her . renditions of
meadow flowers. There are
also paintings by Becky
Garrett, a young artistirom
the Maitland Valley. She is
the daughter of Blanche
Pownall Garrett of Stone
House, one of the earliest
homes in Colborne Township.
A wealth of landscape for
depicting and painting
surroundsStone House.
Jack McLaren, a Benmiller,
artist who painted with the
group of seven and who
currently has a retrospective
exhibition at Confederation
Centre in. Charlottetown, also
has paintings on display in
the basement of Memorial

i-iING?
Well, what a way to start a
day.
The holiday weekend was a
busy one around here if you
can go by the amount of
traffic around town.
A good rain helped take the
dust off the grass, the trees
and the buildings. A good
eighty percent of the town's
grass was fried, the twenty
percent that was green -
green - indicated how much
water they were using to
make it that way. Luckily we
were not into a water shor-
tage.
August first holiday, among
other things had a great
turnout at the local Lawn
Bowling Club. The greens
were good and the players, on
the whole were jovial. Of
course at a tournament folks
are quite serious - really
trying to win - which makes
for agreat game.
Of all the people who were
trying to do their best, only
one man was, what I would
call, miserable. He is a fine
bowler, but everyone can't be
this -way °or -there Would be no•
competition, no challenge
and no fun.
His partner was also a nice
bowler, but I'm sure the
tension because of his
irritation must have caused
her bowls to falter or go off
on a tangent and embarrass.
everyone within earshot.
This type of person should
just play in the singles or
some other one person effort.
My partner and I played
against an old couple who
have been great bowlers in
their day, but now the wife is
losing the strength needed to
place the bowl where she
wants it to go and so ends up
"with a lot of short bowls that
are far away from the "kat"
and so out in front in your

tetown exhibition, a. number
of skits which he wrote when
a member of "The Dum-
bells" were performed. The
Dumbells were an en-
tertainment group which
evolved out of the first world
war.
There are a number of
prints displayed in the Blyth
Summer Festival art show as
well. The woodcuts and
lithograph of Helmut Becker,
Professor in the Department
of Visual Art at the Univer-
sity af.. Western Ontario, are
printed on handmade paper
containing flax grown near
Blyth.
Bev (Katzin) Walker has a
serigraph, also on a land-
scape theme.
Michael Ward of Blyth is
showing pottery that he calls
his "standard basic ware",
functinnal.-..pots that are in-
tended for evbryday use, with
the premise that well -crafted
work will enrich everyday
lives.
The Blyth Summer Festival
art show has been called "an
excellent little show that
could hold its own
anywhere." It should not be "
missed.
