(staff photo) Soccer, The big news this week is the game of the century has been scheduled for Thursday, July :'8 at the Arena. Don't miss it!! The Goderich Minor Soccer Coaches and some parents have. challenged the match. This will be -an --all out do or die -,affair with yours truly playing in my first ever soccer game. Some of the coaches- wives will be Slip plying the expert coaching we will need to. deal with the PeeWee team. Game time is 7 p.m. In Bantam action, Goderich met up with some stiff competition from the' Sarnia Canadian Legion. Sarnia quickly obtained a 4-1 .lead but our boys fought back to a close 4-3 score. However, Sarnia scored the clincher and final goal to win 5-3. The Mosquito team handed Clinton A's their first loss of the season by a score of 2-1! This was the closest and toughest game the Mosquitos have played all year. The entire team gave a 100 per- cent effort while David Moore was outstanding in goal. JohnThompson and Don McCallum rwere the goal getters for Goderich. The Mosquitos went on to play another tough game against St. Columban. However, in this game it was St. Columban who came out on top by a score of 4-:'. This was also a very close game which could have gone either way. Jeff Denom me and Daryl Madge were the goal scorers. We would at this time like'to thank Rick Fisher for .all the excellent refereeing he has done for the Mosquitos. And also thanks to linesmen Wallace Watts and Dale Steward. The Pee -Wee game was postponed to later date. In the Atom division, the Goderich Atom A's swamped Bayfield 8 - 0. The Goderich Atom A's are now on a four ga-n.jig streak! I leave the country for a- week and our boys clean house right across the board! All the Goderich Minor soccer teams came up with victories last week !! In the Bantam „division Goderich travelled to St. Clair Shores, U.S.A. and managed to hold the American team off in the first half to go into the second half with a 0-0 tie. Goderich was quick off the mark to score two goals. However the hot weather was wearing the boys down and St. Clair pushed in two goals to tie the game once again. However, Goderich sneaked one in with only a minute to play to cinch the game 3-2. The ;Bantam team has now won four of their six games. . In the Pee Wee division Goderich shut -out Bayfield in a• lopsided game.. Goderich then travelled to Seaforth short three of their key players but still managed to come out on the better end of a 3-1 score. The Goderich team played an excellent passing game and main- tained possession of the ball throughout the better part of the game. Phil Grace scored on a pass from' Dave McDonald to put Goderich ahead 1-0 at the half-time break. In the second half Ron McInnes scored o1- a_pass from George Kerr to make it 2-0. At this point Seaforth scored their goal to keep it close and tough. Dave MacDonald then scored assisted by Kerr to give Goderich their 3-1 victory. John Hough played an excellent half -back position as he r° an and ran and ran and never seemed to tire out. Also showing lots of hustle in this game was Tim Goddard. Coach Vic Alexander stated he was very pleased with his boys as they played ex- tremely well. The Goderich Mosquito team blanked Clinton with a 9-0 shut -out! Special -thanks were made to Alvin's TV, Mr. Stereo, and Radio Shack, all of Goderich, for their assistance with extra equipment used during the celebrations. The next meeting -will take place Sunday, August 14th, 1977 at the Goderich Legion at 7 p.m. their fourth win slipping by Clinton 3-1. This was a good tough game with the score tied 1-1 at half-time. Clinton's goal came from a penalty kick. So watch those penaltie§ boys - they can kill you. However, Goderich came on strong in the second half to score two unanswered goals. The Atom B team put everything together and got onto the winning track. First they showed great im- provement by playing to a 1-1 deadlock against Clinton. Darcy McGee scored the goal on a pass from Todd Gilchrist. On Thursday the Atom B's travelled to Bayfield where they' picked up a 2-0 victory. Todd Wilson scored the first assisted by McGee •and Gilchrist. Brant Williamson put the second one in with McGee once again picking up the assist. In the Squirt division Goderich evened the score with Clinton. Last, month Clinton had defeated Goderich 1-0 in a close hard game. This time it was our boys who handed,Glinton a 1-0 loss. Now you sure Can't get two teams any closer than that. Patrick Kelly, formerly of Kingsbridge and now of Holyoke, Massachusetts, ended his professional welterweight boxing career more than 15 years ago but is still deeply involved in the sport. Kelly is organizing - boy's club boxing in his hometown and is doing the corner work for his 14 year old son Brian. The 14 year old is a 11, pounder and his coaches call McGee - Pontiacs moved back into the league lead in Industrial League action recently when they walked over Brindley Transport 22-4. The Pontiacs collected nine runs in the first inning and went on across the next four to grab the rest and Shorten the game. Paul Kelly got a one out double that started the nine run spree in the first inning. Doug Spitzig got one on a Trucker error and a fielder's choice allowed Rick Sowerby to single. Ken Vanderburgh, Ken Meriam, Deb Shewfelt and John Phillips each drew walks to score four runs and Harry Kerr drilled a single to score two more . An error on Paul Kelly's Second hit of the inning accounted for the rest of the Pontiacs scores. Rick Sowerby beat out an error in the 'second and started a three run rally for BAYFIELD LIONS FROLIC Arena and Fairgrounds FRIDAY, JULY 29 McGee. Vanderburgh singled and Meriam drove Sowerby over with a one bagger. Kerr singled to score Vanderburgh and Meriam. Kelly scored two more, Ron Sowerby hit a round tripper, Spitzig scored twice, Rick Sowerby twice, Meriam twice and Shewfelt once to run the Pontiac total to 22 in four innings. The Truckers scraped up four runs in the fourth to at least get on the board. Louis Yundt led off with a single and moved to third on an error on Mark Kernaghan's hit. Glen Linner singled Yundt home and Fraser Strong smacked a two run double. An error on Bruce Bowman allowed Strong to come in with the final Trucker run. Rick Sowerby gave up seven hits in the win while loser Phil Black and reliever Henry Kolkman gave up 15 hits. him a "tough kid who likes to punch';:? Pat Kelly left his home near Kingsbridge to pursue a career in boxing. He fought professionally as a welter- weight and had fights in cities like Detroit and Boston. He had several bouty at the famous Madison Square Gardens and won decisions in them.
