eritage Day tours
provide peek into past
4
BY JOANNE WALTERS
About 280 people got a peek
into the past when they toured
six historic houses and two
old churches in Goderich on
Heritage -Day, July 5.
The tour which was part of
the Jubilee celebrations was
conducted by the Huron
County Board of Architec-
tural Conservancy Society of
Ontario. There- were three
tours altogether beginning at
1:30 then at 3:30 and finally at
7 p.m. Each building on the
tour was unique in both its
architecture and its history.
The first stop on the tour
was St. Peter's Roman
Catholic Church at 156 North
Street. This church was built
in 1834 and was the first
church of any denomination
to be erected in Goderich.
It was rebuilt 'on the same
site in 1896 under the
supervision of Father West.
Maitland quarry stone was
used as the construction
material. The total cost of
construction was $17,000.
The pews in the church
were made by the Goderich
Organ Company which was
located at the corner of East
Street and Cambria Road,
where McCallum's Funeral -
Horne stands today. At first
families rented their own
pews but later this practice
was eliminated. ,
The original tinsmithing in
the church was done by the
grandfather of Harry and
Bert Worsell of Goderich. Ttie
church's windows are the
original stained glass ',win-
dows which were releaded at
a high cost a few years ago.
In 1910 a fire in the church
caused extensive smoke
damage to the interior. The
main altar was repaired and
the high altars were
removed. Hans Potzle of
Goderich redesigned the
wooden altars. The stations of
the cross were hand carved
by Karl Rothamer of the
Kitchener •area. They were
donated to the church by Mrs.
Zeta Baechler of Goderich in
memory of her father.
In 1940, after collecting
$2,200 in three days, the
church brought a Hammond
organ. • _
A church hall has been built
underneath the church. This
was a feat that engineers had
called,impossible.
GEORGIAN PLAN
Leaving St. Peter'sChurch,
the tour bus headed for Judge
Francis G. Carter's"house at
38 St. Vincent Street. This
house was built in 1863 for
Hugh Johnson. At that time it
was heated by a fire place
and wood stove.
The house has a Georgian
plan. It features a veranda
with double columns, twelve
foot ceilings, a huge crystal
chandelier and an intricate

The next stop on the tour
was the residence of Jim
Donnelly at 103 St. George's
Crescent. Thishouse was
built by William Sharmon in
1877 for Horace Horton who
had moved to Goderich in
1835 and at the mere age. of 17
had become a member of the
first Goderich town Council.
He later became mayor of
Goderich and•an MP for the
riding of Central Huron. -
Dr. Benson Whitely moved -
to the house around 1900. The
house features a winding
staircase, player piano and
huge kitchen.
SVC FIREPLACES
The tour continued with a
stop at the Cayley Hill
residence at 27 Wellington
Street North. This house' may
have been built in either 1848
or 1853. There is some dif-
ference ofopinion about the
date. A Canada Company
official . named Charles
Widder was the builder.
All the brick for the home
was manufactured in the
area. The formal dining room
has black walnut walls and .
-features a beautifully carved
American walnut fire place.
The other rooms are of red
pine.
There are seven fireplaces
in the house and six of them
are usable. In one room sits
Tiger Dunlop's chair. French
doors lead to a patio and to
