:11 ARTIINS RETURN,
After spending the winter months
:n the south where snow and winter
blasts and cold weather are not known
the martins, that for Many years have
inhabited the cosy nooks of Mr.
Fitton's verandah, returned last week.
IIt was rather amusing to watch these
beautiful species of the feathered race
return to take charge of their summer
quarters,. During their absence their
summer haunts are .invariably taken up.
by the sparrows, and finding them an
full charge it uses a fight to see wh'ch
of the tribes was going to bore sway,
It was soaCli, however; evident tbat the
sparrow was no match for the martin.
and ,his sparrowshin and family, al-
though putting up a stubborn . fight
had to evacuate,

which will prove both beneficial and

Southcott. Arrangements are being
made whereby a junior team will be
entered in the North Wellington Base
ball League, and the people of Exeter
and the surrounding country will be
provided with some snappy baseball
this summer. It is the "intention also
to form a basketball league with Lu -
can, Parkhill and other places, and a
local soft -ball league as a beginning,
But, in order to ,make this venture a
success it is necessary to lave the
support pf the general public, and ev-
erybody should take a hand in the
gauze they like as there will be lots
of room on any game cpen to every --
