He held services in scores of centres which he reached on horseback or on foot, but the register discloses only two instances of marriages performed by him elsewhere than in Goderich. Following the annihilation of the Hurons by the Iroquois in the Mid sixteen hundreds, there is no evidence that Page 97 Goderich was visited by a non -Indian until 1826, when W. E. Goodwin and Frank Deschamp- established an Indian trading post at the mouth of the Maitland River. In June, 1827, Goderich as such was founded by Dr. William '`Tiger" Dunlop and John Galt.
