complete the church in
London village. At a later
date Mr. Fraser accepted the
charge of a congregation in
West Gwillimbury, which he
retained until 1879. In 1851 he
succeeded Mr. Proudfoot as
the clerk of the United
Presbyterian Synod. Queens
College, Kingston, in 1876
conferred upon him the
degree of doctor of divinity.
Mr. Fraser kept;a journal for
some years. He gives
splendid descriptions of
American eating habits,
Methodist meetings, the
Temple and establishment of
the Children of Peace. He
supported temperance
societies, . and in this and
many other respects differed
from the missionaries sent
out from Scotland. The diary
of Rev. William Fraser is the
more valuable because his
viewpoint is Canadian in
contrast to that of Mr.
Proudfoot; which in many
respects is that of a Scot.
Because of his long con-
nection with Knox
congregation --43 years --
something of the life and
work of Rev. Robert Ure
ought,,to be recalled at this
time. He was born in 1828 in
Lanarkshire, Scotland, where
his father was a manufac-
turer in iron. When 19 years of
age. he settled at Hamilton
and completed his theological
course at Knox College in
1850. Upon ordination he
accepted a call to Stouffville,
and remained there 12 years.
He lectured at Knox College
and Queen's University, and
Queen's honored him with the
degree of Doctor of Divinity
in 1876. His ministry at. Knox
began in June, 1862, and he
served the congregation with
distinction until failing health
compelled him to relinquish
