ST. PATRICK RESIDENCE A year after he bought the "Spring" lots on thio bank, Seegmiller purchased from the Canada Company the lots on the south side of St, Patrick Street, next Waterloo, and built, probably in the same year (1858) the the large red brick house which was home of the Seegmillers until 1882, and since 1963 has belonged to Lorne Dotterer. It is a house of considerable architectural interest, with some traces of for Seegmiller occupation. ob When it is stated that Jacob d Seegmiller "built'' something, it means his 11 contractor, and the only one al of his contractors who can be e identified at present is Adam w MacVicar, a noted builder t. here from about 1853. Miss e Lillias MacVicar, Hincks , Street, a granddaughter, has e noticed among his papers the e name of Seegmiller. f The Signal (1875) states that while Seegmiller oc- s cupied the building which was n` to become the British Exchange, "a- targe brick 1 tannery which he owned and t rented to W.G. Smith, corner of Waterloo -St. Patrick (not St. Patrick but Nelson) was burned," Seegmiller at no time owned the Smith Tan- nery, but Smith after five years of operation borrowed on mortgage from Seegmiller, and the fire mentioned may have made it necessary to find new capital. Smith's sons, Wm. F. and Arthur, took over the business in 1905. It was demolished to make way for the Breckenridge apart- ments. Base of the walls was found to be three bricks thick. "Although he never held a public position," the Signal said in Jacob's obituary, "yet he has done much for Goderich, and from among its citizens the town will miss an energetic and enterprising business man and a much - esteemed friend," Congratulations to the Town on its 1 S 0th Birthday W.E.
