The manse was probably begun in 1854, when the CIergy 'Reserve Fund com- missioners offered 150 pounds, conditional upon the congregation of St. Andrew's raising .50 pounds more, which was done. Four lots in all were obtained from the Canada Company, and a loan of 500 pounds was obtained from the Trust & Loan Co. Rev. Mr. MacKid agreed to have theinterest paid out of pew rents. To meet his wishes, a large cellar was built under the main part of the house, and also a kitchen at the back. The brick used for the manse, though long ago painted red, is actually a kind of orange color. On this point, Mr. B. Napier Simpson, Jr., Willowdale architect, states: "There are buildings around that countryside, from Goderich say as far as London, all made of the grey stock brick with the pink flashing. This brick and its coloring obviously was a result of using local clay, and so in the earliest of buildings you would have to allow that perhaps the bricks had been a hand -made•. operation, in which the'bricks were made right in the land where the 'structure was to be erected. These hand -made bricks are usually smaller than a standard brick." The full-length verandah'on Turn to page 44 • >i' e I . CONGR G G DERI. on your • 150Th ANMITlISAy.
