James Watson. a general
merchant, built the mansion
which for many years was the
residence of M.C. Cameron,
and afterward the hospital. ,
He had come from Roxr
hurghshire, Scotland, in 1841.
His eldest daughter, Ann
Lambert Watson, married in
1`451, Dr. Morgan Hamilton,
then 44 and a widower. They
had two sons'and a daughter.
I)r. Hamilton died in 1858. Six
years later. Mrs. Hamilton
and Dr. George C. Shannon
called on the rector of St.
George's with matrimonial
intent, without knowledge or
consent of the bride's father,
or so the story goes. The
following notice appeared in
the Huron Signal: '
"MARRIED. - At Tweed
Bank, Goderich: on the 7th
inst., by the Reverend E.L.
Elwood, A.M., Chaplain to the..
Lord" , Bishop of Huron and
Rural Dean of Huron and
Bruce, George , Carroll
Shannon, Esq.. M,D., to Ann
L. Hamilton, eldest daughter
of James Watson, Esq.; J.P„
Mayor of Goderich,, and
relict of the late Morgan
Hamilton, M.D. Sept. 15.
1864,"
This couple had one child,'
John Reginald, who
graduated in medicine in
time • to join his father in
practice here. Reg. was
elected mayor in ' 1896-97
unopposed. He died of typhoid
in 1901. his father in the same
year.
John Valentine Detlor, a
native of Napanee, sold dry
goods and groceries on
Hamilton street and later on
the Squalre where the
Breckenridge store is now. As
reeve, he was- a member of '
Ston who came from Omagh,
Ireland and settled at Lon-
don, then, hearing favorable
newsof the Sarnia area, "sold
his farm in London toayoung
Anglican clergyman, Mr.
Cronyn,'.' That would be the
future first Bishop of Huron.
Hugh .Johnston married
Matilda, daughter of William
Bennett Rich, Goderich, and
_built the Vincent street house
now .occupied by Judge
Carter. He was at one time
deputy registrar of deeds.

honors, the one chosen to be
inscribed on his tombstone:
"Mayor of Goderich,--4869
